Graphically violent
Revisado: 12-24-15
This author is a good writer & this was a good story but if I had known how graphically violent it was I never would have selected it, especially for an audiobook where you cannot easily skim over the stomach turning parts like you can with printed pages. The audio performance was excellent

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

I wanted to love it
Revisado: 02-17-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I spent ALOT of time listening to this book. Tarrt is a good writer, but way too much time describing Theo getting/being wasted - just not an interesting thing to read about/listen too. Theo, while sympathetic because of his situation with his parents, is not very likeable.
Has The Goldfinch turned you off from other books in this genre?
no
What does David Pittu bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He was great - he brought life to the characters - although I kind of felt that Boris would have lost his accent somewhat by the time he was in his 20's
Could you see The Goldfinch being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I won't watch it if they do
Any additional comments?
Maybe my expectations were too high? I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this book

Historia
Nate Piven is a rising star in Brooklyn’s literary scene. After several lean and striving years, he has his pick of both magazine assignments and women: Juliet, the hotshot business reporter; Elisa, his gorgeous ex-girlfriend, now friend; and Hannah, "almost universally regarded as nice and smart, or smart and nice" and who holds her own in conversation with his friends. But when one relationship grows more serious, Nate is forced to consider what it is he really wants.

great book about contemporary relationships
Revisado: 08-22-13
If you could sum up The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P. in three words, what would they be?
Smart, perceptive and interesting
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.?
The almost break up scene and the break up scene were well done. There was also a lot of insight into how men think about women and relationships versus how women think about men and relationships, and how these differences cause problems and issues between men and women. Men have it easier I think - this book was consistent with that view, although they suffer as well.
Which character – as performed by Nick Podehl – was your favorite?
I really liked Hannah until she got overly involved in, and hopeful about the relationship, and ultimately kind of desperate - which I could also relate to. Auritt was great of course. I would be friends with Auritt in real life and she would judge me. I thought the performer did her really well
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The end, for a moment, and then it didn't anymore
Any additional comments?
I recommend this book. It really held my interest - I will watch for this author's next book

Historia
This touching and uproarious novel by author Paul Murray made everyone’s best fiction of 2010 lists, including The Washington Post, Financial Times, Village Voice, and others. Why Skippy dies and what happens next is the mystery that links the boys of Dublin’s Seabrook College (Ruprecht Van Doren, the overweight genius obsessed with string theory; Carl, the teenager drug dealer and borderline psychotic; Philip Kilfether, the basketball-playing midget) to their parents and teachers in ways that no one could have imagined.

great book!
Revisado: 03-26-11
I loved this book. Very smart and funny. Great writing. Memorable characters. And the audio version was fantastic. A whole cast performed it, rather than the usual one person. All the actors were wonderful. I highly recommend this book especially to people who like quirky characters and writing. The author reminds me of John Irving a bit

Can't get it out of my mind
Revisado: 10-07-07
I'm so glad I got this one on audio b/c the narration was so well done. I listened to it over 1 run and 2 long car drives. It takes place in nucleur winter, and involves 2 survivors, a man and his small son, walking south on "the road" headed somewhere warmer, - I was told that premise and wasn't particularly interested, but I needed a book for my long drive and I was riveted, disturbed, fascinated, and totally impressed with the terrific writing. I think that there are major religious themes (There is no God and we are his prophets) but I have not worked them all out yet. Get this book

Loved it
Revisado: 05-28-07
This was a great book. Funny and well written, and I really came to love all the main characters, especially Bonnie (she took off her glasses)and Danny, but also Vincent and Meyer. No one was a carictature (even Raymond, who was sympathetic in his own way), well, except maybe Lo the Ho, but she deserved it, everyone was complex. The narration was pitch perfect. I understand people's complaint about the ending, but it had to be that way - leaving you to imagine how things will work out and hope that they do. One of those books that you are really sad to realize has ended
