Don Winslow has the uncanny ability to write pitch-perfect crime fiction in any setting (East or West Coast) of any format (short story or extended novel). I've listened to a few of these shorter tales in rapid succession and Winslow is always consistent. His character introductions and backgrounds are fleshed out, despite the brevity of the tale. This one has an unexpected ending - sometimes characters can surprise you.

Ed Harris' narration makes a great story even better. One of the best.

Sometimes fact can be as interesting as fiction. David Wise has an uncanny ability to tell a tale which doesn't drag or indulge in useless filler while remaining engaging throughout. The Seven Million Dollar Spy is no exception.

The narrator is perfect for the text.

Another nice installment for the Last Hunter series. The war with the Locusts and the Poseidon Group goes in a new an unpredictable direction.

The narration is consistently well done.

New challenges await Jack Romanoff and his fleet in the Faust system and nearby cluster. The Locusts have returned in force as the crew of Delta Orionis deals with local elements of the Poseidon Group who have successfully taken over the Confederation. There are a few twists in the plot to keep interest. I'll keep reading them if Chaney & Mixon keep writing them.

Jeffrey Kafer continues his track record of solid narration.

Operation Liberty delivers large scale combat sequences as the saga unfolds. Jack Romanoff and allies find creative ways to defeat humanity's enemies within the Cluster, though the Novarites still remain with several planets still under occupation. Another fun read.

The narration is excellent as it has been throughout the series.

Some great ideas but a few that haven’t aged well

The first part of The Exponential Age which goes into technology trends and development is highly absorbing. Ideas from the second half of the title, however, such as the effectiveness of COVID vaccines and economic solutions to the negative aspects of the gig economy haven’t aged well since the book’s release in 2021.

The author does a fine job narrating, possibly better than his writing.

Every new volume is like going back and seeing old friends. Under Siege finally introduces us to the forces of Castellara in their pursuit of the Novarites. The first half, though somewhat plodding sets up the second half of the story.

Great narration as with every book in the series.

A towering triumph with new perspectives on Stalin

First a caveat - this isn't an easy read. I found myself listening to various sections multiple times (sometimes to absorb and understand and sometimes because I lost the thread of the narrative). Soviet history with its atrocities, frequent central committee plenums and shifting ideological alliances can be repetitive and numbing.

This is due to the material and not the author - Stephen Kotkin is a thoughtful and engaging Soviet/Russian historian whose absorbing YouTube interviews and speeches inspired me to grind through this weighty tome. He knows more about Joseph Stalin than perhaps anyone alive. He's researched Soviet archives which were accessible for only a brief time. These documents combined with a 4 decade immersion in Russian history have enabled Kotkin to deliver clarity and original perspective of Russian Communist History, the feckless Czarist autocracy of Nicholas II, and Bolshevism's early adherents.

The Bolshevik revolution, its chaotic aftermath and the ensuing decades of the rise of Stalin are usually misunderstood or misrepresented for political purposes. Stalin was a true ideologue who defies binary definition. The dictatorship he built was no accident and an impressive achievement, in the dark sense of the word. This is not an ideological study with an agenda, other than to shed light on an elusive time and place which cast a long shadow on the 20th Century and still resonates to this day. Some reviews of this book have criticized Kotkin for being strongly anti-Communist. On the contrary, he has presented a balanced study which gives a fair treatment to Stalin, Trotsky, Lenin and the nation they birthed.

I think I'll need to read a few light mysteries before tackling Volume 2.

The narrator is superb - striking the right tone with this material requires a thoughtful expression that avoids droning through long passages without superficial enthusiasm.
