Historia
It’s 2006. After a string of rejections from men who tell her they could never, ever, ever see her “that way,” awkward third-grade teacher Micaela Blei signs up for a mysterious course called “The Divine Feminine,” and feels like she might have found the key to the perfect life. Turns out if you’re an A student, you can get an A in anything–including men. Pretty soon she’s learning to "conjure" her desires with vision boards, flirtations, and even a daring jumbotron viewing party for her, ahem ... "divine center."

Hilarious, self affirming, and surprisingly insightful.

I loved hearing about her journey to self love and body love. What a wonderful ride! I also loved the ending and her final revelations.
The ending felt a bit sparse and rushed. Some of the most valuable lessons were in her conclusion. I wonder about the steps and some of the experiences that fueled her epilogue. Regardless, well worth the read.

Courageous, Inspiring, Intelligent
Revisado: 01-15-25
This true story about a female Soviet sniper during World War II inspired me to overcome my challenges with grit, determination, and love for my country and family. The heroine is a no nonsense pragmatist who uses her gifts to their greatest potential. She claims her talents without apology in a world that seeks to diminish her because she is a woman.
I liked seeing her view of her home country. The way she cared for her son, even though separated from him for so many years, brings new meaning to the possibilities of motherhood. Descriptions of wartime reality felt accurate and devastating.
Her transformation into an advocate for her country in the United States along with her friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt gave the book even more interest and heart. I’m very glad I listened to this book. Thank you to the author for many hours of pleasure.

Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

Fascinating, Honest, and Innovative
Revisado: 12-25-24
For the first time I feel I understand what it’s like to be a sociopath. Patric takes us into her world and shows us the struggles and mindset of someone without empathy, guilt, or an understanding of what it is like to be “normal.” Her path to happiness is nothing short of miraculous. This is a book not just for the lay person but also for professionals working within the mental health field. I have been a psychologist for over 30 years. Patric’s story blew my mind. I wish I’d read this a long time ago. If this book reaches enough people, the world’s understanding of sociopathy can make a dramatic shift for the better. Only someone with Patric’s intellect, honesty, and unique life experiences could have written this story. Thank heaven she put her experiences down in words so that we can learn from her.

Honest, Profound, Fascinating
Revisado: 12-08-24
I have never read an author before who so clearly recognized the part of herself that can’t face some things. Sally has an unusual awareness about her own avoidance for someone so self-aware. She writes about old letters and reviews she can’t bear to read and still hasn’t read, and is brutally honest about her mistakes, insecurities, and shortcomings.
Her development as an actor is fascinating. As a girl I loved watching “Gidget” and “The Flying Nun,” and always wondered why her performance in “The Flying Nun” embarrassed her so. Now I understand.
Hearing about her romances and marriages, captured the dance between women and men at that time, and maybe all time. I admired her ability to walk away from Burt Reynolds, yet understood why she stayed as long as she did. As she describes her longing to be loved and safe, I resonated with that same feeling in myself and other women of that time. Who knows? Maybe young women today have that same longing?
What touched me the most, and made the greatest impact was the way she describes her relationships with her mother and sister. How wonderful that through it all, they managed to hold onto each other and she was always just “Sal.”
I felt more sympathy for her biological father than she did, but greatly appreciated the clarity with which she described their relationship when she was young. A lightbulb went off in my head as I realized that many men simply didn’t have the tools to be caregivers, and had no understanding of how their behavior was lacking. I wonder if this is more of a cultural failing than it is a failure of her father.
I’ve loved Sally Field in all of her roles including this role as memoirist. It was great to hear her voice describe her life in the audible version. Sally is so unmistakably herself and yet manages to completely embody so many other characters too. How does she do that? Ultimately, she uses her characters to come home to her true self. Her commitment to her craft and desire for excellence was inspiring.

Magical, heartbreaking, and Inspirational
Revisado: 08-03-24
The characters are multilayered and fascinating, each adding a sense of the times and the enduring message of the frailty and strength of the human spirit. I was riveted as I listened, and often had trouble pulling myself away from the story to do other things. I love the way the author presents both the glory and the harshness of religious beliefs. Bearing witness to the inhumane treatment of our government and its people toward Native Americans helped me more fully understand our country’s history as well as the remnants of that cruel behavior that still lingers today. The hope and resilience shown by the main characters gave me comfort that we can also, with time, overcome the cruelty in today’s America. I fell in love with these characters and the family they created. This is a book to be savored. I found myself reflecting on the many lessons the author delivers.

The gentle wisdom and subtle message inspired and uplifted me. The author is new to me but I will be eagerly reading his other books. He makes the ordinary extraordinarily beautiful.

Fun, clever, sumptuous, and profound.
Revisado: 06-23-24
I loved everything about it- the premise, descriptions, characters, and romance. The plot was clever. There were wonderful life lessons that I wrote down so I can remember them. The only reason I didn’t give the book 5 stars overall was that the chase section was too long for my taste. It seemed to go on and on to a painful degree. The ending, in my humble opinion, could have also used some tightening. But these flaws were more than dwarfed by the originality and delightful warmth I felt reading this book. I’m very glad I chose this book. I’ll seek out other books by Brynn Kelly.

Disappointing
Revisado: 06-09-24
The book held my attention, but I hated the ending. The person I found most sympathetic was the husband. He was at least human and honest with himself. The way he was treated left me cold and ruined the entire book for me. Some people will appreciate the dark, surprise ending. I found it ugly and depressing.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Originality

The characters were interesting, quirky, and likable. I enjoyed the author’s take on the culture at that time. I like that she honored traditional women who prepare family meals, yet was very much an independent, liberated woman. The love story was beautiful. The book was surprising with many twists and turns. I especially enjoyed Miss Trask’s transformation. An intelligent, entertaining, and thoughtful book.

I just finished listening to the "Health Interrupted" interview with Dr. Tom Schneider. Dr. Schneider is a fascinating man with so much wisdom to offer. He is refreshingly honest and wise, and his humorous delivery made the time speed by. There are so many of his suggestions that I will use. I am particularly struck by his view of the medical field and his advise for enjoyment of life. Thanks to Laura and Gina for making this inspiring material available. They did a great job of asking the right questions and steering the conversation into areas that I care about the most.
