Historia
Lynda Van Devanter was the girl next door, the cheerleader who went to Catholic schools, enjoyed sports, and got along well with her four sisters and parents. After high school she attended nursing school and then did something that would shatter her secure world for the rest of her life: in 1969, she joined the army and was shipped to Vietnam. When she arrived in Vietnam her idealistic view of the war vanished quickly. She worked long hours in cramped, ill-equipped, understaffed operating rooms. She saw friends die.

Much better than "The Women"
Revisado: 02-21-25
I read this memoir when it was published in the 1980s and decided to listen to it on audible because I was disappointed in "The Women" by Kristin Hannah. I am so glad I made the decision to listen and am appreciative that it is available for free.. "Home Before Morning" was even better than I remembered. Raw and heartbreaking but such an important story. 5 stars.

Another home run
Revisado: 02-11-25
I can't figure out why more people don't know about this series. This entry, like the other four, is outstanding. Likeable protagonists, snappy dialogue, touches of humor, clever plot, great narration. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a mystery series that has touches of Nero Wolfe, Sherlock Holmes, film noir, Mickey Spillane and more.

Historia
It's 1942 and Willowjean "Will" Parker is a scrappy circus runaway whose knife-throwing skills have just saved the life of New York's best, and most unorthodox, private investigator, Lillian Pentecost. When the dapper detective summons Will a few days later, she doesn't expect to be offered a life-changing proposition: Lillian's multiple sclerosis means she can't keep up with her old case load alone, so she wants to hire Will to be her right-hand woman. In return, Will is to receive a salary, room and board, and training in Lillian's very particular art of investigation.

Great story and narrator
Revisado: 06-09-24
I very much enjoyed this first book in the series. The narrator was great. I particularly enjoyed the hardboiled 1940s feel. Clever and fun. I have already purchased book 2.

July 1912. Lady Hardcastle and her tenacious lady’s maid, Florence Armstrong, are enjoying a convivial gathering at the home of their dear friends, the Farley-Strouds. Historia
In the wake of World War II, four agents were critical in helping build a new organization that we now know as the CIA. Adelaide Hawkins, Mary Hutchison, Eloise Page, and Elizabeth Sudmeier, called the “wise gals” by their male colleagues because of their sharp sense of humor and even quicker intelligence, were not the stereotypical femme fatale of spy novels.

I enjoyed this very much. It was a well researched glimpse into a relatively unknown part of CIA history. I can appreciate that the detail might not be interesting for some listeners, but the detail is what appealed to me. The narration also worked for me.

I have loved this book since I first read it 30+ years ago, but I gained a new appreciation for this American classic when listening on audible. Sissy Spacek really brings every character to life. I now listen to this audible version every year. It's a must listen.

Revisado: 11-13-17
This book was recommended to me as a YA novel. It was so much more than that. I thoroughly enjoyed the historical backdrop and found the storyline very interesting. It kept me engaged from start to finish. I also really liked the four narrators for the four main characters. Overall, recommended reading for anyone. "Audible 20 Review Sweepstakes Entry.”

Boring

Great premise (a mystery narrated from the perspective of the dog) but the story was poorly written and just plain boring. I am not sure how this book got such high ratings from so many others, but I would not recommend it.
