This is a mash-up of the four Gospels and laced with Christian propaganda. There is nothing new here to discover, no new exegesis on faith, no new theologies given. It seems to be a simplification of the Gospels for simple minded people. Nothing of Academic value whatsoever

I wanted a historical account of the Mayan Religion. This is not that. This is New Age hoodoo drivel. Absolutely unlistenable

Story is fast paced, almost too fast. Would like more character development. Narration was amazing and probably carried the book.

This is a book for Christians by Christians. It takes to the final chapter, after speaking in circles for hours and hours, to get to the point.

The historical Jesus doesn’t matter. Only the theological Christ matters.

If you’re seeking a resourced based book about the historical Jesus. Look elsewhere. This book is Christian theological gobbledegook

There’s a lot of good gems in this book. At times Hedges comes across as petulant but most of his points are valid. The reading of a previous interview is a little trying at times. Chris’s emotions come across as flat which could lead to the impression of him as bratty. Overall you’d have to love Hedges to love this offering.

Everything the author says at the end seemed to come true with the election of Donald Trump. It is a very sobering read, almost despair inducing. No solutions are offered…except perhaps to read more books…and maybe read to your children as well——just don’t read them this book.

The story is pretty good and deliciously gory. The author is perhaps a little too generous however, this book could be tightened up a little bit. I wonder if it would have worked a little better as a period piece, maybe 1940s or 50s because it’s a little pulpy, fantastically scifi in a bygone way, and the character’s interactions with each other seem a little old fashioned and dated.

The narration is pretty annoying…almost obnoxiously presumptuous bordering on pretentious. I don’t think he should have attempted any voices.

Audio quality is good though.

All in all, the story was enjoyable but I wonder if I’ll ever think of it again.

Laugh-out loud funny with some brilliant anecdotes about the growth and progression of human civilization. Nick Offerman’s narration is absolutely perfect. Do not deprive yourself of this book.

How about a little disaster porn to get you on the path to Climate Awareness and Climate Studies. This isn’t a comprehensive study on the coming effects of sea level rise but it isn’t meant to be. It’s meant to scare the crap out of you, and I hope it does. I enjoyed the narration a lot, I’ve seen reviewers saying they didn’t but I thought it was great. Overall, an enjoyable light-hearted reading of humanity’s looming existential crisis.

One of King’s best

So yes, the film is iconic. One of the greatest ever. And I feel a lot of people under 40 will come to this after seeing the film first. This book will inform a lot (the dog man most especially). I understand King’s hatred of the film. Most things the book gets better (Jack’s character development and alcoholism, Wendy’s character, even the satisfying finale. The references to Poe are sooo good.) This may be one of King’s best thought-out novels. Some things Kubrick did right (swapping a maze for topiary animals was an excellent choice. Swapping an ax for a roque mallet another). It’s a little dated, especially with Halloran fully embodying the “Super Duper Magical Negro” trope, but I feel like the depth of the character development, especially of Wendy, and some great backstory to the Overlook make it so worthwhile and allow some forgiveness. It was after all 1977, and King has (in most instances) come a long way. In fact, in 1977 having an African American as a main character and a hero was pretty progressive…and sort of smacks of George A Romero work…who I know King loves. All in all, this is one of King’s best, and reading it while inform you on how King is an expert at the novel, and Kubrick is an expert at the film, and sometimes the two just doesn’t fit together perfectly.
