Historia
Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

Why didn’t I read this book sooner?
Revisado: 01-01-24
Excellent book. This is probably the best memoir I have ever read… And I have read quite a few. We Tyson useless her whole self in this book that take the time. In this book, Kyson takes her time offering the reader lots of content and texture.

Historia
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

Historia
My darling little boy Albie adores playing at our new neighbours’ house. And after the terrible year we’ve had, I feel so lucky that we can start over in this perfect place, with new friends who treat Albie like the son they never had. He can’t stop talking about the tree house they’re building him, and the cookies they bake together. But as time passes, something starts to feel wrong. Why don’t they ever open the front door more than a crack? They told me they had no children so who does the small pink tricycle I saw in their hall belong to?

A must read!
Revisado: 12-13-23
This book is successful at highlighting the nuances of the Bethune-Roosevelt friendship. Because the friendship was interracial and so public (somewhat), we see the peculiarities of a classist/racist society and how these strong women combat these attitudes. While we see these issues throughout the book, it is also a delightful book simply about friendship and what it can do for us as people. I recommend this book, especially for lovers of this genre!

Historia
When author Jeff Hobbs arrived at Yale University, he became fast friends with the man who would be his college roommate for four years, Robert Peace. Robert's life was rough from the beginning in the crime-ridden streets of Newark in the 1980s, with his father in jail and his mother earning less than $15,000 a year. But Robert was a brilliant student, and it was supposed to get easier when he was accepted to Yale, where he studied molecular biochemistry and biophysics.

More complex than one would think!
Revisado: 12-13-23
This book is a complex examination of a very gifted young man. His journey is remarkable, but it is sad that there are similar stories just like his. This book stayed with me for a very long time because it is no simple story. I highly recommend this book, which is an birdseye view into our imperfect society.

A must for historical fiction lovers!
Revisado: 12-12-23
This book is very well-written, quite engaging. It follows the life of characters who are impacted by sexism, xenophobia, and other issues in the early 1900s. The story flows and is so well-done that I felt like I knew the characters personally. This is a story of perseverance for sure!

Historia
Felicia “Fe Fe” Stevens is living with her vigilantly loving mother and older teenaged brother, whom she adores, in building 4950 of Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes. It’s the summer of 1999, and her high-rise is next in line to be torn down by the Chicago Housing Authority. She, with the devout Precious Brown and Stacia Buchanan, daughter of a Gangster Disciple Queen-Pin, form a tentative trio and, for a brief moment, carve out for themselves a simple life of Double Dutch and innocence.

I can't say enough!
Revisado: 12-12-23
I absolutely loved this book. Although the main characters were teenagers for most of the book, this is not a teenage book. I kind of view it as historical fiction. But the history is accurate and the characters are nicely-developed throughout the book. Although I am not a native to Chicago, I have lived in Chicago for most of my adult life. It was refreshing to read about that monumental summer through the eyes of people who lived there, albeit fictional.

Historia
1914, Fiji: 25-year-old Akal Singh would rather be anywhere but this tropical paradise—or, as he calls it, “this godforsaken island.” After a promising start to his police career in his native India and Hong Kong, Akal has been sent to Fiji as punishment for a humiliating professional mistake. Lonely and grumpy, Akal plods through his work and dreams of getting back to Hong Kong. When an indentured Indian woman goes missing from a sugarcane plantation and Fiji’s newspapers scream “kidnapping,” the inspector-general reluctantly assigns Akal the case.

Nicely performed!
Revisado: 12-12-23
This book is fairly well-written and nicely performed as an audiobook. The various accents are well-done. I liked the storyline but the conversations have an undercurrent that was triggering for me. Colonization by the British impacts the thoughts and decisions of the main character throughout. It was a lot.

Yinka’s Nigerian aunties frequently pray for her delivery from singledom, her work friends think she’s too traditional (she’s saving herself for marriage!), her girlfriends think she needs to get over her ex already, and the men in her life…well, that’s a whole other story. But Yinka herself has always believed that true love will find her when the time is right.

Great light reading!
Revisado: 12-12-23
I tend to be drawn to books about the immigrant experience, and this one does not disappoint. The narrators' accents were excellent/authentic. The storyline is one that is timely but Yinka is endearing, which helps this book to be light-hearted and delightful. My only misgiving is that there are too many minor characters.
