Historia
Mystery and misconception surround the geisha. At first glance, she may appear to be rather average looking, heavily clad in a weighty costume and an excess of make-up. But behind this mask lies a range of artistic skills and social etiquettes of immense importance to Japanese culture, past and present.

Historia
Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump are the self-styled prince and princess of America. Their swift, gilded rise to extraordinary power in Donald Trump’s White House is unprecedented, unconstitutional, and dangerous. In Kushner, Inc., investigative journalist Vicky Ward digs beneath the myth the couple has created that depicts themselves as the voices of reason in an otherwise crazy presidency and reveals that Jared and Ivanka are not just the president’s chief enablers, they are, like him, disdainful of rules, of laws, and of ethics.

Frankly you need a flow chart to keep track of everyone. The downside was the battalion; Mispronunciations are one thing but please, no accents. Fiona Hardimgtom has a lovely English accent suited for Jane Austen but attempts a clumsy American accent that makes everyone sound like a bad 40s movie. You may want to consider the print edition

Night Vale nightmare
Revisado: 10-23-18
This book is an existential nightmare. It starts out interesting enough but by the time it goes through repeated phrases, insane imagery and just plain weirdness, I found I really didn't care. Kafkaesque is not even close. The bizarre side notes hearken back to Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy, but without the charm or whimsy, in other words, Adams did it far better.
If you like the podcast, this is for you, however if you are unaware, steer well clear.

Historia
Set in the 1970s in a run-down, rainy, industrial town, Jo Nesbo's Macbeth centers around a police force struggling to shed an incessant drug problem. Duncan, chief of police, is idealistic and visionary, a dream to the townspeople but a nightmare for criminals. The drug trade is ruled by two drug lords, one of whom - a master of manipulation named Hecate - has connections with the highest in power and plans to use them to get his way.

Shakespeare, reimagined
Revisado: 05-02-18
Of all the Shakespearean updates, this is one of the best. Norwegian writer, No Nesbø (the Snowman) takes the one of the bards most famous plays, updates it to 1970's Scotland and turns it on its head. Cooked cops and politicians, motorcycle gangs, casinos and drugs replace the ancient battlefields for one wild ride of a read that looks at power and honour.
Euan Morton deserves a lot of credit for putting souls into each of the characters that he voices. Well worth the time.

A Dead Man in Deptford re-imagines the riotous life and suspicious death of Christopher Marlowe. Poet, lover, and spy, Marlowe must negotiate the pressures placed upon him by theatre, Queen, and country. Burgess brings this dazzling figure to life and pungently evokes Elizabethan England.

An overlooked gem
Revisado: 04-27-18
I'm surprised that there aren't more reviews. I'm a fan of Anthony Burgess and more importantly, Christopher Marlowe, heretofore to be called Kit, as those who knew him did.
His life, his poems and plays, his work as a spy and his assassination nearly lost to the annals of history in favour of his contemporaries. Thankfully, Burgess uses historical record , previous biographies plus his muse to flesh out a man who lived and loved (the love that dare not speak its name) hard and was brave (or foolish) enough to question the church, state and the Machiavellian machinations of royalists, loyalists, Catholics, protestants and God himself. His work as a spy was somewhat reluctant and his attempts to untangle himself led to his death
We get insight into his interactions with the various nobles, members of the Privy Council, fellow spies, fellow writers, including Shakespeare, privateers and even Sir Walter Raleigh who introduced him to the "nymph" tobacco. This becomes a fine historical romp through the Elizabethan era that shines an ugly light on the dark (is there any other) side of religion and politics that still seems to permeate the modern world.
As the 30th of May marks the 425 anniversary of his murder, it is more the reason to read it

Forget your preconceptions
Revisado: 04-21-18
Everyone will see this and think they know the content, you might be surprised. The present drama is in the last few chapters. Instead, you learn of a man who has been in pursuit of justice and the rule of law even when it might have ended his career, as in the Bush administration when he questioned the stance on torture and his desire for justice for all people in the wake of infamous cases such as the deaths of Eric Garner and Tamir Rice
Please, pocket your preconceived notions and read this book
