With a charming voice, a wonderfully dry sense of humor, and an abiding gift for spinning a yarn, best-selling author Lisa Alther makes an impartial, comprehensive, and compelling investigation of what actually happened in the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys, masterfully setting the feud in its historical and cultural contexts, digging deep into the many causes and explanations of the fighting, and revealing surprising alliances and entanglements. Here is a fascinating new look at the infamous Hatfield-McCoy feud.

A Good History, A Poor Commentary
Revisado: 06-13-24
The first half of the book was fascinating and expertly wove together an understanding of history, myth, and motive. But the book underwhelms in the second half with an overly long commentary that relies more on contemporary politicking than historical analysis. Still interesting to some degree, just not what I was looking for.

A Fascinating, Rarely Heard Epic
Revisado: 09-30-21
If you thought the Hollywood legend The Searchers was a big enough tale, you were wrong. This telling of the making of the film, the making of the men behind it, the making of the legends that inspired them, and the making of the history the shaped it all is astounding and rewarding. Definitely worth the read!

Mixed but Interesting
Revisado: 09-22-21
The content of the book is definitely interesting although not always engaging. The performance by the author is weak, however, and often dips in quality mid-sentence. Overall a worthwhile insight into an interesting subject

Historia
The revised and updated edition of Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's modern classic about the psychology of combat, hailed by the Washington Post as "an illuminating account of how soldiers learn to kill and how they live with the experiences of having killed". In World War II, only 15 to 20 percent of combat infantry were willing to fire their rifles. In Korea, about 50 percent. In Vietnam, the figure rose to more than 90 percent. The good news is that most soldiers are loath to kill.

Horrifically Poignant
Revisado: 09-28-19
Never has a subject been more important and been less talked about than the psychology behind what makes men kill, what happens to men after they kill, and the societal effects of desensitization to killing. This book delves deep into that world in a blunt, direct way helping all of us-- both killer and non-killer-- understand the toll of warfare and death. A must read despite a subpar audio performance

A Deliciously Cruel Glimpse at Madness
Revisado: 09-23-19
Misery, whether through it's metacommentary, online storytelling, or frankly insane subject matter makes the reader feel like they themselves are slipping into madness. Annie Wilkes is one of the greatest and must horrifically splendid monsters in all of fiction. A must read for any fan of King, of fiction, and of madness.

The Meditations, his personal journal, survives to this day as one of the most loved self-help and spiritual classics of all time. In How to Think Like a Roman Emperor, psychotherapist Donald Robertson weaves stories of Marcus’s life from the Roman histories together with explanations of Stoicism—its philosophy and its psychology—to enlighten today’s listeners. He discusses Stoic techniques for coping with everyday problems, from irrational fears and bad habits to anger, pain, and illness.

Digestible Stoicism
Revisado: 09-17-19
Most, if not all, of us are a little intimidated when it comes to learning about philosophy; especially ancient philosophy. This book however delivers the powerful philosophy of stoicism and the inspirational life of Marcus Aurelius in a way that is not only educational and uplifting, but is also entertaining and riveting. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to take a deeper dive into self-mastery, emotional intelligence, and philosophical understanding. It can help each of us, fate permitting.

There is No Trick: Put in the Work
Revisado: 08-30-19
I was absolutely floored by this book. I wish I could retroactively take all the 5 Star reviews I've given away and make this the first one because it has set a new standard for excellence; just like David Goggins would want. If you ever want to accomplish anything, push yourself harder, do better, this book gives you the bloody and sweat-drenched instruction manual to so. There's no trick to being the exceptional among the exceptional. Just put in the work.

This book did not disappoint. Often, when it comes to hailed literature, I find the result to be a bit underwhelming. The Shining however thrills, terrifies, excites, intrigues, and touches you on every word. Absolutely loved it.
