One of my absolute favorite books
Revisado: 11-03-22
So multi-dimensional; so thought provoking; so entertaining; so intelligent; so imaginative; such a deep penetration into and detailed portrayal of The simplicities and complexities of human nature, behavior, motives, And vulnerability; such a perfect blending of the mundane with the fantastic; such a clear comprehension and illustration of good and evil and the ongoing conflict between them and the Operations and objectives of each; such a creative and carefully crafted representation of the very real cosmic warfare and how each of us might individually play a part in it - in other words, so C. S. Lewis! Though the third book in a trilogy, it can stand alone, and I personally think it’s superior to the first two.
This was my fourth time reading/listening to That Hideous Strength, and this Audible edition did not disappoint.

Words Cannot Express ...!
Revisado: 08-07-20
Powerful, majestic, awe-inspiring, intoxicating! Makes me think of the mighty Lord God who created the sea! I listened with my headphones, and it's almost too wonderful and magical for sleep. The wild restless waves of the sea seem to arouse an answering restlessness within which, while altogether pleasant, initially seems to contradict sleep. Yet the waves are also very soothing, and sleep will surely come when you least expect it and before you know it so that you will likely never hear the end of the recording. Highly recommended-with or without earphones-for all nature-lovers and anyone who is anxious or simply having trouble falling to sleep by one who has had an enduring love-affair with the ocean from infancy, who probably has more salt water flowing through the veins than blood, and who has had a life-long struggle with getting and staying to sleep.

A mysterious boatman on the Thames, a drowned heir, a dustman and his wife, and a host of other Dickens characters populate this novel of relationships between the classes, money, greed, and love. The 58 characters are presented with remarkable clarity by David Timson.

Bravos all around!
Revisado: 03-02-20
Expertly crafted. Wonderfully narrated. It takes a dickens to create such a colorful variety of characters, and it takes a Timson to come up with enough voices to give them each Audible expression. The author and the performer are a worthy match, and the end result is an utterly delightful and satisfying listen.

Took Some Getting Used To, But ...
Revisado: 01-03-19
I like it! With few exceptions (like some of the children), the voice acting was amateurish and unconvincing at best, and the overall story was cheesy, exaggerated, and predictable, perhaps even for some younger readers, yet somehow and oddly enough, I ended up warming to it! When asked by an Audible Customer Service Rep. if I wanted to return it, I surprised myself by responding with a vehement, "No!" and instead, clutched it to myself protectively. The parents keep loving each other despite becoming exasperated , the kids are refreshingly respectful to the adults and kind to one another, the music is
original, and it unself-consciously acknowledges that Christmas actually has something to do with Christ. It's definitely not for everybody, and my guess is that many will be (and will remain) disappointed with it, just as I initially was, but it's mine for keeps, and I'm happily stuck with it now.
