Great character development, excellent performance, solid (prehistory) story.
Revisado: 10-28-24
I really did not enjoy the complete patheticness of the female character. Her " I need a man and I'm going to grasp onto every single word every man says to me hoping and praying that they will love me but realizing that nobody would ever love somebody as menial and useless as me" sad sob story kind of made me sick to my stomach. I think it very much detracted from the whole story.

Historia
Besides having dangerous encounters with mammoths, wolves, and saber-toothed tigers, Moctu has to deal with his older rival, Jabil, who fights and undermines him at every opportunity. After Jabil murders several elders who go against him, he deftly shifts blame onto the Pale Ones. He takes over as the tribe's leader and makes Moctu's life miserable. On a hunting trip, Moctu is captured and enslaved by the Pale Ones. While with them, Moctu is shocked to discover that these primitive people can make fire, and he learns the skill.

Young adult audience
Revisado: 07-24-24
This was a ... nice story, maybe written for an 8th grade reader. However it has the requisite sex scenes, including sexual violence, making it less appropriate for very young readers. The storyline felt limited, not much character development or depth. I thought the performance was ok, but it drove me absolutely crazy to have him pronounce words ending on ois as if they ended in oir (think travoir instead of travois)!! Other than that, the reader was fairly interesting. I listened to the full book but I don't think I would have missed out if I just gave up around the middle of the book.

Historia
On the Caribbean island of Saint Domingue, an island consumed by the flames of revolution, a senseless attack leaves only one survivor - an infant girl. She falls into the hands of two French émigrés, Henri and Solange Fournier, who take the beautiful child they call Ruth to the bustling American city of Savannah. What follows is the sweeping tale of Ruth's life as shaped by her strong-willed mistress and other larger-than-life personalities she encounters in the South.

So nice to see Ruth portrayed as a woman as opposed to seeing her as a slave/Mammy.
Revisado: 07-18-24
I do wish I'd heard more about Ruth's love and disappointments in life. She must have had many. I would also have enjoyed more interaction between Ruth and the other black people she interacted with. It gave me chills to have Ellen address her by her given name as though she and Ruth were friends. However I suppose that encourages that nasty trope of kind and loving, generous owners of enslaved people. All in all, it was well worth the read.

The highly anticipated follow-up to William R. Ties up the first two books nicely.
Revisado: 06-28-24
It ties up the first two books fairly well. I didn't see any glaring storyline holes. I felt like this didn't grow the characters as much as he did in the first two books. this seem to be much more about more tactics and such which is fine but I wanted greater character development. I think the reader was ok. not really, just okay. I think I'm going to pass on that last book because I don't think there's much more of the story to tell.

War story...Minus the story part
Revisado: 03-19-24
This seemed to me less of a well-told story and more of an opportunity for some self-aggrandizing hoorah. The characters here are poorly defined, lack depth, and lean entirely too heavily on stereotypes to create a sense of relationship among them. I lost count of the similes after 32 in just the first half of the book. I think perhaps he slows down a bit with them in the second half (like a big iron locomotive coming to tight mountain turn LOL). Really they got pretty monotonous after a while. I finished the book to see if it came to some sense of conclusion or closure for anyone in the story. it did not. I certainly would not read the second one.

Dry and predictable
Revisado: 01-11-23
This story starts off with sort of a dystopian intention I suppose but the only dystopian piece is this the author makes it easier for parental rights to be terminated for child abuse. Beyond that one twist, this is just a sort of basic fictional novel. Freida, the main character, leaves her child unattended and ends up in extreme parenting school for a year or so. There really isn't anything compelling about any of the characters in the story. The author inserted a little sex here and there to try to grasp the reader's interest, but it didn't serve to move the story forward at all so it seemed pretty gratuitous to me. Apart from poor character development, there was little in the way of plot lines. The ending was quite predictable, the final several lines reading like a poorly written Junior high School essay. I gave it two stars because I found the practice child at the school slightly interesting and the narrator was clear and precise. Not recommended reading in my book.

Historia
On the day the government decrees that women are no longer allowed more than 100 words daily, Dr. Jean McClellan is in denial. This can't happen here. Not in America. Not to her. This is just the beginning. Soon women are not permitted to hold jobs. Girls are no longer taught to read or write. Females no longer have a voice. Before, the average person spoke 16,000 words a day, but now women only have 100 to make themselves heard. But this is not the end. For herself, her daughter, and every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice.
