Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Good but long...
Revisado: 12-30-24
I have been a fan of Anne Rice for a long time. The writing is excellent and the story was interesting but it was entirely too long. The story starts off slow but if you can power through the first 10 chapters itself worth it. By the time I go to part 2, I was invested and had to keep going. I wasn't crazy about the ending but this is the first book in a trilogy, so it's to be expected to leave you hanging. Not necessarily a cliff hanger but you know there's more to the story. I might listen or read Lasher which is the second book but I need a break.

Not bad.. But not my favorite
Revisado: 06-27-24
I enjoyed his book but it's not my favorite from this author. There were parts of the story that were kind of all over the place. The narrator was very good and gave life to the story. I will say the story got more interesting as it got closer to the end of the book, but overall it was ok.

I love a good who done it! This book kept me quessing until the end. The narrator just added to the humor and drama of the story. I found myself laughing and gasping out loud.

I was not expecting to enjoy this book so much. I Iistened to it while I was at work and I found myself gasping and fussing out loud along with the story. It's a little scary because it's a reflection of real life and being a single woman who lives alone I can so relate to the emotions this character went through. But that ending.. All I'm going to say is Karma baby!!

In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Not Bad...
Revisado: 06-14-23
It starts off really slow and at first I thought I wasn't going to be to finish it, but it got better as the story progressed. The narrator was very good, but the characters with accents sounded older than I believe their characters actually are. Other than that I enjoyed the book.

Wasn't sure what to expect
Revisado: 01-12-22
This was an interesting book. A couple of times I started to stop listening because it was slow to start but as the story progressed it got more interesting. I plan on listening to the rest of the series because it sounds like the story is is going to get deeper in the next one. The narrator is really good, her accent really brings life to the characters.

Almost didn't get through it
Revisado: 11-20-21
The story was good but the narration was a bit annoying. The male narrator made it difficult to get through the book. When he tried to change his voice to narrate different characters they sound raspy and stupid. The female narrators voice was a bit too breathy and dramatic but she could have done the whole book and it would have been better. The only thing about the story that drove me crazy was how nieve mirabelle was. At times it boarded on pathetic but other than that it was a good story.

How the chapters are numbered
Revisado: 01-18-21
I enjoyed this book very much but they way the chapters are numbered is misleading. When the narrator changes it shows as another chapter which is not correct. Just something to consider.

An Amazing Story
Revisado: 07-31-18
I'm not going to lie, I almost stopped listening after the first few chapters because it started a little slow. But once I got to about chapter 5 I was hooked and couldn't stop. This is a story we can all learn from and I look forward to listening to the next book.
