We as a society are self-censoring at record rates. Say the wrong thing at the wrong moment to the wrong person and the consequences can be dire. Think that everyone should be treated equally regardless of race? You're a racist who needs to be kicked out of the online forum that you started. Believe there are biological differences between men and women? You're a sexist who should be fired with cause. Argue that people should be able to speak freely within the bounds of the law?

"quote, unquote"
Revisado: 05-05-25
Unlistenable. It's completely unnecessary and totally distracting to constantly use quote, unquote to frame subjects words. Listeners are able to discern without this and it makes for an unpleasant listening experience.

Historia
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.
Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands.

I had to really struggle through the "reading" of this book. I skipped the entire chapter that was sung: actually SUNG. I understand that would be a hard bit of writing to render in an audiobook but it was unbearable and I would have preferred a simple recitation. I couldn't stand the acting - in particular the character of the therapist. I had to skip through some of that as well.
The logbook litany of Bernadette's comings and goings - how did an editor ever agree to this? Ugh.
Book had its moments. This was not one that worked as an audible for me at all.
