As a Christian
Revisado: 01-13-22
Hard to find good, clean stories with interesting plots as a Christian.
I liked the story and laughed out loud at times.
I have already recommended this book to others.
These are not perfect Christians who do perfect Christian things.
The characters have actual struggles and actually demonstrate faith and repentance.
Yet it is not preachy at all. I dislike fiction that gets preachy.

Loved this Audiobook
Revisado: 08-06-18
I cannot imagine loving this as much in paper or on the screen. My imagination could not turn the words into songs -- the reader did a very good job at this. The opening of the book grabbed me; I listened straight through in only a couple days.
I always like to be warned about sexual scenes (why don't books have ratings like movies???). I would say the sexual scene and undertones throughout the book would give this book an R rating, not X. Skipping the scene would not detract from the book as a whole. I would not recommend this book for a young person or for any man who would be tempted to sin as a result of reading this book.
I like knowing very, very little about a book before reading it. If this is you, stop reading this review and just start your listen. I recommend the book.
I really enjoyed both main characters and their stories. I loved the math discussion and allusions. For example, the discussion of the Grand Hotel was a really interesting paradox that I had not heard before.
Amy impresses me. She knows enough math, enough hymns, enough about the music industry, and enough about the Bible to write this book. Impressive! I would not call this a Christian book. As a Christian, you would likely have a problem with Bonnie's thinking about relationships and sex; about Infinity's lack of belief; and thus, about their relationship in the context of this divide. In real life situations, this relationship would not likely last forever, though the book portrays it as such.

History was made at the 2015 Belmont Stakes when American Pharoah won the Triple Crown, the first since Affirmed in 1978. As magnificent as the champion is, the team behind him has been all too human while on the road to immortality. Written by an award-winning New York Times sportswriter, American Pharoah is the definitive account not only of how the ethereal colt won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes, but how he changed lives. Through extensive interviews, Drape explores the making of an exceptional racehorse, chronicling key events en route to history.

The Narrator is Better at Faster Speed
Revisado: 06-15-18
Enjoyed parts of the book. I learned how much I dislike the people around horse racing. There were also far too many boring tangents; I wished there was a ‘skip the sidebar button’ option in audible for this book. If I had paid for this book, I would have returned it.
I always listen to books at 1.25x or 1.5x, so I slowed this book down to understand complaints about the narrator. The narrator is much, much better at an increased speed. That is why audible gives us this option is to tune the narration to the speed of our own minds.

Moneyball reveals a quest for something as elusive as the Holy Grail, something that money apparently can't buy: the secret of success in baseball. The logical places to look would be the giant offices of major league teams and the dugouts. But the real jackpot is a cache of numbers collected over the years by a strange brotherhood of amateur baseball enthusiasts: software engineers, statisticians, Wall Street analysts, lawyers, and physics professors.

The Draft Picks Did Not Pan Out in the End
Revisado: 05-13-17
I read this book and enjoyed it. Then, I became curious what all these "contrarian draft picks" did in their careers. Not so much.
The A's were also at least partially good because of steroid usage.
All this being said, this book has some interesting ideas about the modernization of metrics and data in baseball. I like the Astroball book better.

Any additional comments?
I have listened to many books. I have thoroughly enjoyed quite a few. This is the best so far. I could not stop smiling through the last few chapters. The characters are so interesting, the narrator so good, and such an excellent, real story. So good!

It’s December 1997, and a man-eating tiger is on the prowl outside a remote village in Russia’s Far East. The tiger isn’t just killing people, it’s annihilating them, and a team of men and their dogs must hunt it on foot through the forest in the brutal cold. As the trackers sift through the gruesome remains of the victims, they discover that these attacks aren’t random: The tiger is apparently engaged in a vendetta. Injured, starving, and extremely dangerous, the tiger must be found before it strikes again.

Terrible Ability to Keep the Story Moving Along
Revisado: 04-09-16
Chapter after chapter of introductory material that is not the story itself. All of it doesn't make the story better when it comes. This book needs an abridged version -- as in the first fifteen chapters need to be reduced to two chapters.

Historia
In the winter of 1952, New England was battered by the most brutal nor’easter in years. As the weather wreaked havoc on land, the freezing Atlantic became a wind-whipped zone of peril, setting the stage for one of the most heroic rescue stories ever lived. On February 18, while the storm raged, two oil tankers, the Pendleton and the Fort Mercer, were in the same horrifying predicament. Built with “dirty steel,” and not prepared to withstand such ferocious seas, both tankers split in two, leaving the dozens of men on board utterly at the Atlantic’s mercy.

Good, Not Great Storytelling
Revisado: 02-16-16
The book storytelling does seem a bit scattered--hard to follow at times. Overall, I enjoyed the book and understand the true story better. As usual, a true story book is better than a "based on a true story" movie.

Historia
In February 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers in the Russian Ural Mountains died mysteriously on an elevation known as Dead Mountain. Eerie aspects of the incident—unexplained violent injuries, signs that they cut open and fled the tent without proper clothing or shoes, a strange final photograph taken by one of the hikers, and elevated levels of radiation found on some of their clothes—have led to decades of speculation over what really happened.

Terrible Narrator!
Revisado: 06-30-15
I have listened to a lot of audiobooks. This was not read with the vocal variety and inflection of the master's. I got to the end only because I skipped chapters. Great, sad story. Enjoyed the conclusion. Just needed a professional narrator.
