Historia
White rural voters hold the greatest electoral sway of any demographic group in the United States, yet rural communities suffer from poor healthcare access, failing infrastructure, and severe manufacturing and farming job losses. Rural voters believe our nation has betrayed them, and to some degree, they’re right. In White Rural Rage, Tom Schaller and Paul Waldman explore why rural Whites have failed to reap the benefits from their outsize political power and why, as a result, they are the most likely group to abandon democratic norms and traditions.

A sad take on the rural decay in our nation
Revisado: 07-10-24
This was well written but difficult to listen for a rural dweller. I have lived through the decline of the quality of life in rural America and still struggle to understand how minorities are scapegoated for this decline. Clearly it is policy that put us in this place and not our neighbors.

Moving and timely
Revisado: 03-23-24
This gripping memoir is well worth listening to. The author is also an excellent speaker and the pace is methodical but gripping. The subject matter is heavy but never overwhelming in its’ darkness. I found myself listening, leaning forward, desperately hoping the boy would make it across the desert to his family. Highly recommended.

Fellow at Ethic & Public Policy Center, scholar at The Institute for Human Ecology at CUA and the nationally best-selling author of the Theology of Home series, Carrie Gress argues that fifty years of radical feminism have had the opposite of the intended effect and have granted primacy of place to the traditionally male sphere of life, while simultaneously devaluing the typical attributes, virtues, and strengths of women.

A dark look into the religious right’s hatred of women
Revisado: 10-30-23
I only listened to this because I’m familiar with the author and wanted to see what malarkey she’s putting out this year. The religious right wants women silenced, and firmly under the control of the patriarchy. Listen if you want an eye-opening account of just how much the Catholic right wing loathes women the strides we’ve made at work and in society.

After Jason’s world falls apart in LA, he moves to Berkeley for a fresh start with his kid brother. Just one problem: his long-closeted Adderall addiction has exploded into an out-of-control crystal meth binge. Within weeks, Jason plunges into the sprawling ParTy n’ ’Play subculture of the Bay Area’s gay community. It is a wildly decadent scene of drugs, group sex, and criminals, and yet it is also filled with surprising characters, people who are continually subverting Jason’s own presumptions of the stereotypical tweaker.

Historia
Verteran investigative journalist Stevie Cameron first began following the story of missing women in 1998, when the odd newspaper piece appeared chronicling the disappearances of drug-addicted sex trade workers from Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside. It was not until February 2002 that pig farmer Robert William Pickton would be arrested, and 2008 before he was found guilty, on six counts of second-degree murder. These counts were appealed and in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada rendered its conclusion.

Historia
Growing up gifted and working-class poor in the foothills of the Ozarks, Monica and Darci became fast friends. The girls bonded over a shared love of reading and learning, even as they navigated the challenges of their declining town and tumultuous family lives—broken marriages, alcohol abuse, and shuttered stores and factories. They pored over the giant map in their middle school classroom, tracing their fingers over the world that awaited them, vowing to escape. In the end, Monica left Clinton for college and fulfilled her dreams; Darci did not.

A Heartfelt Tale of Class Struggle and Addiction and Despair
Revisado: 06-08-23
Ugghhhhh….. as a blue collar, white, rural woman this book didn’t tell me anything I have not already observed. The rural US is growing more isolated, populations are shrinking in most rural counties. Students of limited means are not, for the most part, going on to do better than their parents. What the author failed to discuss, is the immense importance of rural communities. Why are they important? Those countries grow most of the meat and fruit and vegetables that we eat. Slaughter houses are all located in rural areas. All of these food products must be trucked into cities. Without an at least functional rural economy, out food supply chain will fail. Rural communities are important to those of us living here: we value clean air and water, we want our children to succeed. Not all of us are conservative. Addiction has gutted our communities, just as deeply as it has urban areas. I would add too that land is intrinsically valuable. Many rural people are concerned with loss of biodiversity and top soil and river and stream pollution from CAFOs. The land - and the people - are both suffering deaths of despair. Agriculture and land use policies that are not sustainable will not foster sustainable communities.

While his wife and two-year-old daughter watched TV in the living room, David Poses was in the kitchen, measuring the distance from his index finger to his armpit. He needed to be sure he could pull the trigger with a shotgun barrel in his mouth. Twenty-six inches. Thirty-two years old. More than a decade in a double life fueled by depression and heroin.

A brutally honest recovery memoir
Revisado: 02-12-23
It’s high time (pun intended) that the standard narrative of abstinence only recovery is challenged. Opiate addicts benefit from medication assisted recovery. Stop shaming those on buprenorphene - it works and it saves lives.

Historia
A biographical exposé of the dark side of modern corporate religion, as told by a former Evangelical fundamentalist Christian minister turned gay activist. Says Tom, "How did I ever fall for it? When I accepted Jesus Christ into my heart as my personal Lord and savior, I went all in. Years later I had to struggle to find a way to get out of both the ministry and the closet as well. I was a gay man trapped in the ranks of the Fightin' Fundies - constantly mentally recording their every word."

A Hateful Diatribe
Revisado: 08-23-22
The author is obviously resentful of the evangelical church, of which he was a part of for years, and focuses on “exposing” the “fighting fundies” as frauds and bumpkins. What struck me the most was his total lack of self reflection. He had many affairs with men while still married to his wife and touts this as healthy exploration of his sexuality. He glorifies promiscuity and classism. This is one of a handful of books I’ve regretted purchasing.

Historia
In 2013, the Toronto Police Service announced that the disappearances of three men—Skandaraj Navaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi, and Majeed Kayhan—from Toronto's gay village were, perhaps, linked. On January 18, 2018, Bruce McArthur would be arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, and later sentenced for the murders of eight men. This book tells the complete story of the McArthur murders. Based on more than five years of in-depth reporting, this is also a story of police failure, of how the queer community responded, and the story of the eight men and the lives they left behind.
