Didn’t expect to like this, but I really did.

This is a very fun read. The protagonist is imminently likable and the story is fast paced enough to keep the reader engaged. I’d compare it to Locke Lamora meets Riyera with a few Brandon Sanderson characters thrown in. Lots of political intrigue and thieves guilds, with an overhanging menace to the world vibe. Will definitely continue the series.

The writing doesn’t always flow well. Like the writer wants to share information about a character, by having the character think about something, but the thoughts don’t flow one to another. The transitions are jarring. The psychological profiles of the protagonists are shallow and trauma based tropes.

Production better than 1st book, but still problematic

Great story and good narration, but unfortunately again the production company isn’t properly editing the narration. The reader corrects herself multiple times, restarting sentences, which should be edited out, but are not.

Changed narrators and poor coordination

Another excellent read by Brown. His writing style has really improved since the first book. This series is well worth listening to. That said, I have real issues with the narration on this one. Two of the narrators have changed since last book. I do love both of the new narrators, but the issue is that there doesn’t seem to have been any attempt to maintain consistency with the previous books or even among the various narrators in this book. Accents vary wildly depending on who is reading. Moira quirk is an excellent reader, but can’t she do an Irish brogue? If the other readers are giving Lydia an Irish accent as a Red should, why does she suddenly not have an accent when in her own POV? Why would Darrow have no accent when in any other POV, but suddenly have a distinct brogue in Lysander’s? It’s just poor editorial control by the audiobook company.

Slow start to an excellent story

The book gets off to a rocky start. The author seems to prefer short sentences, which makes the pacing in the action scenes really tense and amazing, but he doesn’t really slow down and add imagery, so the beginning, which should paint a picture of the world, doesn’t capture the reader. Then the action kicks in and sweeps you up so you can’t put it down. This is a book that really would have benefited from a better editor who should have pushed it back to the author to re-write a few passages to fix some obvious flaws so they don’t distract from what is, fundamentally, an excellent book.

Great story. Not great narration.

This is a fantastic book. The narrator does it justice for the most part, but there are two major issues. First, the editors have completely forgotten to remove the restarts. Where the narrator corrects herself, she clearly anticipates that the editors will cut the first reading, but they don’t, so in every chapter there’s at least place where 4-5 words repeat in slightly different tone. In one case you can clearly hear the narrator get confused and say “mais c’est bizarre” and places where she corrects the pronunciation of os from singular to plural. The second issue is the narrator’s choice for Harrowhark’s voice, which is supposed to be high pitched, but dear god, not that piercing IMO. Still, strong recommendation from me for French readers even though I prefer the English.

An excellent book, read by an excellent narrator. My only complaint is that the music between characters is far too loud. If I’m listening while falling asleep, the music is piercing and startling.

Volume issues in production

I’ve only started this story because I’m having such a problem with the recording. The narrator speaks very softly when narrating the background text, and the volume shoots up for the dialogue. This results in uncomfortable peaks that are making it impossible for me to listen to this at anything but the lowest possible settings and therefore only when the house is very quiet.

Story is better than the narrator

The narrator’s cadence for non-dialogue text is terrible. Not bad when reading dialogue, but it’s really off otherwise. A decent Story otherwise.
