I kept skipping this book in my audio collection, after having skipped it in my waiting list for months before that.

I finally decided to check it out and realized that I had shelved the wrong book - this should have been read as soon as it downloaded! The book itself was meandering along at a 3.5 star rate until the actual premise showed up and I realized what was really going on. Fabulous twist, and very creative. I can't say more without spoilers but it was a great mind-bender-ish revelation and I loved it.

Is there a Konrath fandom yet?!

I am so glad I took a chance on this book! I'm fairly certain I would read anything J.A. Konrath wrote. If he releases a book on the mating habits of sea slugs indigenous to the Arctic regions, I'd read it. And damn if I wouldn't enjoy it. But...the kid of an author? Really? That never ends well. Yes, Mary Higgins Clark and Stephen King, I'm talking about your offspring and how little I like their writing.

I debated. And debated. And then decided to give it a listen. I am so glad I did. Everything from Einstein's experiments to Josh's brilliance to the negative effect of dentures on zombie dining was entertaining. As a bonus, there is a brief interview at the end of the Audible version...I listened to every word of it, too.

Apparently I need to start a Konrath fandom

I love a good haunted house story. This delivered.

Smart move on the author's part to offer this on Kindle with $1.99 Audible narration. I realized the series is going to be fantastic and now I'll end up buying the rest of the series on Audible!

A long prequel?

I liked the book, but it has the feel of a prequel to the real story instead of reading as a standalone book. A long and detailed prequel, to be sure, but still a prequel.

Even with the book following the current trend of one book setting up the next in the series, I still enjoyed it. If it hadn't been for the sheer number of 'oops - had I known the whole story I would have acted differently' situations the characters found themselves in, I would have enjoyed it more. Certain details had to be left unsaid for the plot to work, and those details were conveniently left out each and every time.

Tween monster hunting

I love monster hunting books and it's so refreshing to find one written for a younger audience. I have a 13 year old that would love the MHI series, for example, but the language is enough to stop me from recommending it to her. If you have a younger teen that loves Buffy or Supernatural or other monster-themed shows, and they are a reader, this a good book. Minimal language, minimal sex, violence that's limited to the monsters. It's a good bridge for the genre.

Drew Hayes - 99% awesome

Drew Hayes, you are the King of Superhero Fiction.

I love, love, loved the Super Powered series and wasn't sure what to expect from this book. It was hard to imagine that one author could build such a complete universe for one series, then write another book in the same genre that completely changes all of the rules. I spent much of the beginning thinking, "What?? That's not how you become a cape?" and "They call that training?!?" It all felt backwards and wrong, and then ended up completely right.

Fabulous book and the start of another series I'll read.

However, and this is the second time I've had to mention it, diabetes is not caused by drinking sugar. I quit reading another one of your books when a character mentioned they were drinking a 'huge glass of diabetes' (or something along those lines). It came up in this book, too. Please don't do this. I have two kids with type 1 diabetes that will spend 90 years keeping themselves alive with injections and constant vigilance (and not the Mad-Eye Moody kind.) Making jokes about a disease people can't prevent is unnecessary. Auto-immune diseases aren't funny. ~steps off soapbox now

I have a soft spot for super villains. I have no plans for world domination, I don't want traipse around in a mask. I have no secret subterranean lair disguised as an island. But, there is this part of me that likens super villains to underdogs. I find myself rooting for them in books. Dr. Impossible is one such evil genius. While I found his college behavior tedious, his openness that he was fixated on 'showing them' made up for it. Dr. Impossible had the misfortune of creating his own downfall multiple times, but his can-do attitude will see him through all adversity. I'd love a series, especially if it included a prequel on a fungus army. A fungus army, people. Fungus. Army. I'll admit it - I'd read that

Oh. Dear. God.

Is it possible for a book to be so painful to listen to that it could melt my brain and let it leak out of my ears? If that was physically possible, this book would have done it.

There's Tess. She has a freak out, the family uproots itself to give her a fresh start. She's unrealistically able to find a BFF and garner the attention of Luka, who is basically described as so perfect that no one is immune to his amazingness.

The whole grandmother thing, the change in her brother's personality, the magnetism of this random high school guy, the never ending neurotic mind of Tess...it's all just a miasma of messy characters and plots.

First, let me admit that I bought this book just because the author and I share a first name, and she spells it correctly, too.

Second, I did enjoy the book. There are two aspects to the story: the Lucy-as-killer plot and the other-people-as-killer plot. The first annoyed me, the second entertained me. The 3 star review is a balance of a 2 and a 4. And, it's not that the Killer Lucy story was poorly written - it just seems to be a new but too popular plot line. I feel like I've several books this year that have that same 'it's okay for me to kill but I'll hunt down everyone else that does it' vibe. This one was good enough to finish, unlike some of the others, but still an odd construct.

If you could sum up Sleepy Hollow: Rise Headless and Ride in three words, what would they be?

Surprisingly fun listen.

What did you like best about this story?

Sometimes you buy a book and debate reading it because you have low expectations and wonder if you made a bad choice. This was one of those books. As I'd scroll through my library, I'd see this and think, "Did I actually buy a book called "Rise Headless and Ride"??" I clicked on it one day, though, and was surprised at how good it was. It wasn't just a good choice - it was a great one.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Jason Crane and his grandmother had a relationship that was entertaining, heartwarming and sweet. I loved every conversation they shared.
