Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

No, everything doesn’t happen for a reason.
Revisado: 08-28-22
So disappointed the author cheapened the message of this book to a superstitious notion. He even interwove it with the religious beliefs of the mother, which is real slap in the face to Christians.
For anyone interested there is a TED talk on why everything doesn’t happen for a reason and why it’s harmful to promote this notion.

Disappointing
Revisado: 07-24-21
I was totally enthralled with Lisa Wingate’s two books; Before We Were Yours and The Book of Lost Friends. They are some of the best books I have read. I thought I would go back and read her earlier books. This is the only one I didn’t like. It was slow moving, predictable and I was not fond of the characters. The thing I disliked the most was the premise that everything happens for a reason and there is a plan. This magical thinking Kate Bowler debunks this notion beautifully in her Ted Talk. I hate seeing it promoted in this this book

Very moving book that hit home
Revisado: 10-15-18
As an adult adoptee who worked for twenty years to end secrecy in adoption records, this book was a poignant reminder of the need for continuing scrutiny of openness, honesty in light in adoption. All adoptees need to know who they are and where they come from so they can enjoy full lives rooted in truth and have connections to their family of origin. It was a touching and beautifully written story.
There are still forces at work today, much like Georgia Tann’s, though more sophisticated in their workings aimed at taking children from their birth families. The Mormon church has fought opening records because they want to “seal adoptees in the faith.” The concentration camps set up by our government for children whose families are fleeing threats of death in their own countries are in states that still have closed records and the adoption agency hired to remove them from their parents and place them for adoption is well known for unscrupulous adoptions. There are modern day atrocities still going on today. They are not things of the past.

Historia
The most acclaimed Scottish novel of all time, Sunset Song is a powerful portrait of a land and people in turmoil, seen through the life and struggles of its heroine, Chris Guthrie. In the years up to and beyond the First World War, Chris' resilience, like the land itself, endures despite everything and is portrayed with a lyrical intensity that echoes through the years and still resonates today.

Good book for learning about the land and its authors
Revisado: 07-26-16
I am going to Scotland and wanted to get in the spirit. This was a good one to give me a sense of the people, land and history. The narrator made the story come alive, with her authentic accent being both a pro and con. I enjoyed her accent and the colloquialisms of the Scottish but at the same time found it difficult to understand, especially when she was speaking quickly. I may have to get the written book to study and decipher some of the language. Would recommend!

Once again the authors take readers underground
Revisado: 11-01-15
This time we end up in underground caves instead of tunnels underneath NY City for the chase of the mysterious predator. A creepy environment for the plot to unfold and a very effective one. Another wonderful thriller that helped the many miles fly by for me. I am hooked!

After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

Revisado: 03-19-15
Just delightful. It was so upbeat, fun and engaging. I chuckled, laughed and smiled through most of it. The narrator really made it come alive, so much so I think it would be much better listening to than reading. Looking forward to reading another book by this author.

Very good until he left for Paris
Revisado: 02-22-15
I really enjoyed the beginning of the book, as the boy's life unfolds, and then the rivalry between the two chefs. Though I haven't seen the movie I can imagine the grand French chef being wonderfully played by Helen Mirren. However, the book fell flat when the young man left for Paris and never regained its brightness. I didn't finish it for that reason.
