Historia
The Achaemenid Persian kings ruled over the largest empire of antiquity, stretching from Libya to the steppes of Asia and from Ethiopia to Pakistan. In Persians, historian Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones tells the epic story of this dynasty and the world it ruled. Drawing on Iranian inscriptions, cuneiform tablets, art, and archaeology, he shows how the Achaemenid Persian Empire was the world’s first superpower—one built, despite its imperial ambition, on cooperation and tolerance. This is the definitive history of the Achaemenid dynasty and its legacies in modern-day Iran.

Historia
The Early Middle Ages-the years from A.D. 650 to 1000-were crucial to Europe's future social and political development. These 24 lectures trace a journey from Scandinavia across northern and central Europe to the farthest reaches of the Byzantine and Islamic empires, providing an exciting new look an era often simply called the "Dark Ages."

Brilliant, but verbal affect was tough to listen to
Revisado: 02-11-24
The lecturer was brilliant and knew the material very well. However, he had a verbal affect where he would greatly extend the “a” in the word “and”. This made it tough to listen to for an extended period of time. He seemed to do it as a space filler rather than saying “uh” or “um.”

Historia
Over two millennia ago, the prescient insights of Anaximander paved the way for cosmology, physics, geography, meteorology, and biology, setting in motion a new way of seeing the world. His legacy includes the revolutionary ideas that the Earth floats in a void, that animals evolved, that the world can be understood in natural rather than supernatural terms, and that universal laws govern all phenomena. In this elegant work, the renowned theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli brings to light the importance of Anaximander’s overlooked influence on modern science

Historia
Founded by Augustus around 27 BC, the elite Praetorian Guard was tasked with the protection of the emperor and his family. As the centuries unfolded, however, Praetorian soldiers served not only as protectors and enforcers but also as powerful political players. Fiercely loyal to some emperors, they vied with others and ruthlessly toppled those who displeased them, including Caligula, Nero, Pertinax, and many more. Guy de la Bédoyère provides a compelling first full narrative history of the Praetorians.

Good overall, African section poorly done
Revisado: 09-14-23
All of the different sections are great, except for the African section. The African section professor seems to have no overall arc to his lecture. He randomly names different myth characters, and there is no cohesive narrative to connect them.

Historia
More than 2,000 years ago one of the greatest military leaders in history almost destroyed Rome. Hannibal, a daring African general from the city of Carthage, led an army of warriors and battle elephants over the snowy Alps to invade the very heart of Rome's growing empire. But what kind of person would dare to face the most relentless imperial power of the ancient world? How could Hannibal, consistently outnumbered and always deep in enemy territory, win battle after battle until he held the very fate of Rome within his grasp?

Great book, terrible narration
Revisado: 01-18-23
This book is really great, and we’ll-written. However, the narration sounds like it was done by computer-generated means. There are very odd pauses before any formal noun. The narration is unemotional and dry, and does not flow well at all.

Historia
Who was Friedrich Nietzsche? This lonely and chronically ill, yet passionate, daring, and complex man is perhaps the most mysterious and least understood of all contemporary philosophers. Why are his brilliant insights so relevant for today? How did he become the most misinterpreted and unfairly maligned intellectual figure of the last two centuries?

Great course, but presenters can be repetitive
Revisado: 01-10-23
Though one of the presenters is very clearly brilliant, she is very repetitive with the phrases “in a sense” and “a kind of”. Otherwise it’s really great.

Terrible voiceover
Revisado: 12-01-21
The book sounds very interesting, but I had to stop listening after chapter 1. The reader is just plain awful. He is monotone throughout, and he never pauses. I have no idea when sentences are ending or beginning. And the recording quality is junky. He is constantly popping his “p”s, which becomes really annoying to listen to after awhile.
