Historia
Southern food is integral to the American culinary tradition, yet the question of who "owns" it is one of the most provocative touchpoints in our ongoing struggles over race. In this unique memoir, culinary historian Michael W. Twitty takes listeners to the white-hot center of this fight, tracing the roots of his own family and the charged politics surrounding the origins of soul food, barbecue, and all Southern cuisine.

Yet Another Non-culinary Story Pretending to be One
Revisado: 05-31-23
This book is yet another gender/LGBTQ+ self representation of the author.
It then unfortunately loses completely the value he might provide to all of us who are not black or gay the culinary heritage from which he comes.
Absolutely not listen-worthy.

Historia
Today’s optimistic farm-to-table food culture has a dark secret: The local food movement has failed to change how we eat. It has also offered a false promise for the future of food. In his visionary New York Times best-selling book, chef Dan Barber, recently showcased on Netflix’s Chef’s Table, offers a radical new way of thinking about food that will heal the land and taste good, too. Looking to the detrimental cooking of our past, and the misguided dining of our present, Barber points to a future “third plate”.

Just Awful
Revisado: 05-14-23
This book is yet another sociological appeal to the functionally impossible idea that somehow the US, with 300m+ people can somehow feed itself from local growing.
This guy made a success of a location near NYC where people with money could go up there to eat, stare at their navels, and seriously think that something significant culinarily was going on there.
Will be asking for a refund on this one.

Historia
Burn the Place is a galvanizing culinary memoir that chronicles Iliana Regan's journey from foraging on the family farm to opening her Michelin-starred restaurant. Her story is alive with startling imagery, raw like that first bite of wild onion, and told with uncommon emotional power. Regan grew up the youngest of four headstrong girls on a small farm in Indiana. Regan often felt that she "wasn't made for this world." She was a little girl who longed to be a boy, gay in an intolerant community, an alcoholic before she turned 20, a woman in an industry dominated by men.

Awful!
Revisado: 05-03-23
This is represented as a memoir of an accomplished culinary professional, but instead it is a vanity self reflection of a lesbian and/or person fully immersed in being one or both.
This would be fine if the book were categorized as such by Audiobooks.
I will be seeking a refund for this one, not a food & wine title at all.

Historia
Rolling Stone founder, co-editor, and publisher Jann Wenner's deeply personal memoir vividly describes and brings you inside the music, the politics, and the lifestyle of a generation, an epoch of cultural change that swept America and beyond. The age of rock and roll in an era of consequence, what will be considered one of the great watersheds in modern history. Wenner writes with the clarity of a journalist and an essayist. He takes us into the life and work of Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Bono, and Bruce Springsteen, to name a few.

Outstanding autobiography by Jann Wenner about the most influential counterculture era in the 20th century, and the the broader cultural absorption of that counterculture into American life and politics.
Webber’s self narration is unmatchable.

Historia
Over three consecutive Olympic games, Apolo Ohno has come to symbolize the very best of the competitive spirit - remaining equally gracious in victory and defeat, always striving to improve his performance, and appreciating the value of the hard work of training as much as any reward it might bring. In Zero Regrets, Apolo shares the inspiring personal story behind his remarkable success, as well as the hard-won truths and strategies he has discovered in good times and bad.

Great American Athlete and Person
Revisado: 12-19-22
A family member, fellow OTC resident athlete of Apollo’s in the sport of weightlifting, was very friendly with him, and over the years would mention how hard he trained. He really did all the things he describes in this autobiography.
As important, he found Apolo to be a very nice, intelligent, regular guy interpersonally.
While he would at times accompany Apolo to those training sessions at Garden of the Gods and the trail up the mountain to watch him, he never attempted to actually exercise with him, far too challenging a type of endurance training for a super heavyweight weightlifter he said!
Outstanding insight into the life and times of Apolo Ohno, personal narration extremely articulate and very well done.

Historia
Anthony Bourdain’s death by suicide in June 2018 shocked people around the world. Bourdain seemed to have it all: an irresistible personality, a dream job, a beautiful family, and international fame. The reality, though, was more complicated than it seemed. Bourdain became a celebrity with his bestselling book Kitchen Confidential. He parlayed it into a series of hit television shows, including the Food Channel’s Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and CNN’s Parts Unknown. But his bad boy charisma belied a troubled spirit.

Bourdain Counterpoint Biography
Revisado: 10-28-22
This biography provides insights the already published bios and reminiscences did not, but combined with the others does offer a far more in depth picture of Bourdain the person.
A main thread not provided by the others is this work’s detailing the impact of Asia Argento on him, unfortunately a very negative one, but had it not been her perhaps some other person or situation might have had a similar effect.
Extremely well narrated.

Historia
In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl's halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That's how this extraordinary autobiography began. Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to this audio the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs.

Phenomenal Autobiography
Revisado: 01-12-17
This is a phenomenally well done autobiography by one of America's greatest songwriters and musicians, a son of New Jersey and the Jersey shore.
And for the author also to have read the book so expressively adds to its quality and elegance.
Congratulations Bruce!
