Not too bad
Revisado: 06-22-21
I thought the narrator did a great job. No complaints at all. Didn't blow me away like some narrators, but I thought he did a very solid job.
As far as the story, it should probably appeal to people who really like the YA dystopian genre, but while I like YA, I don't read a whole lot of dystopian, and I found the story a bit slow. I kept putting it down and not picking it up for long periods of time (but, to be fair, I haven't been listening to audiobooks much lately the past year or so, so that's at least partly me). Nearly the entire book takes place in a facility and is about them being tested on. It was hard to see much progress happening, since they were not really even in the real world doing real-world things. There were a lot of characters, but very few of them were distinct enough for me to even remember who they are. Sometimes people would die, and I just wouldn't even care because I couldn't remember anything distinct about the person.
I also had some trouble with this very smart MC doing something very stupid (making the agreement to go to the facility in the first place), given that multiple people he trusted tried to get him not to and he had no way to check that the one thing he was supposed to get out of the deal would actually happen.
So ... I don't know. I think people who are more into this genre than I am might like it, but it was all a bit too boring for me, I think.

Historia
Tristan has known that he and his family were going to be on the first mission to colonize Mars since he was 12 years old, and he has been training ever since. But knowing that he would be leaving for Mars with no plan to return didn't stop him from falling in love with Izzy. Now, at age 16, it's time to leave Earth, and he's forced to face what he must leave behind in exchange for an uncertain future. Then the news hits that another ship is already headed to colonize Mars, and the Neo-Luddite terrorist group begins threatening the Mars One project.

pretty boring
Revisado: 12-04-20
The book did an okay job at getting me interested initially, focusing on one teen who's planning to go to Mars. But a little over an hour in, I was thinking, "What is this book even about?" Because it certainly wasn't about actually colonizing Mars. And it wasn't about the romance between him and his girlfriend, since in the part I listened to, there wasn't even a hint that either of them had any hope at all of actually staying together (such as her maybe coming on a future ship to Mars to join him if things went well). (It wasn't even about them as a couple--how they got together or why they were a couple. It was just 'we're totally perfect for each other; you don't need to know or see why'. Just zero chemistry.) Everything was focusing so much on the technical/historical aspects of the mission and on everyone being sad (but not sad enough to be very interesting or to motivate them to further action in any way) about him leaving, that I developed the suspicion that we wouldn't actually get to see how any of this played out. We wouldn't get to see the actual colonization, and we wouldn't get to see whether he and his girlfriend were able to get back together in the end. So I looked up spoilers and ... let's just say I decided to cut my losses and stop listening.

That’s for the guys with too much brawn and not enough brain. No, Steele works in consulting. After having his license revoked by the Guild of Masked Crimefighters, he decided he would scout talent instead. Worth the time it takes to read it
Revisado: 12-01-20
Interesting characters and the pace keeps moving, though it's a little meander-y. It's a short story that makes me want more in this world, with this character, so I think that's a good sign.

insta-lust from a gross male lead
Revisado: 09-01-19
Couldn't finish this one. The quality of the narration was great, but the story ... I just couldn't stand Benedict. He's in lust with her immediately, and even though this starts out as a Cinderella story, it certainly doesn't go the same way, with the man refusing to stop until he finds her, then immediately proposing marriage even if she's not of his class. Nope, this isn't that story, even though the set-up makes you think it will be at first.
I've been listening to these in order, and I just can't get over how disgusting and disrespectful these male leads are when it comes to anything sexual. This was the worst of them so far, though. Why does this author think that men who have sex with lots and lots of women who aren't their wife--and then either keep reminding their wife of this (like Antony) or expect the woman to be one of his whores instead of his wife (Iike Benedict) ... why does this author think those men can be called honorable, heroic, or perfect? I just don't understand it.

maybe if you really like "bad girl" MCs...
Revisado: 07-19-19
I picked this up (via Audible's romance package) because of the student/teacher romance angle. Unfortunately, this is the type of book that lives or dies by how much the reader cares for the MC and wants to see her succeed. And I just don't.
I'm only a few chapters in, and there's very little of the male love interest, nothing so far following up on the interesting mystery that the prologue sets up, and a whole lot of a "bad girl" (rude, disrespectful, slutty) going about what seems to be a pretty sucky and meaningless life.
I've always been a "good girl" type, so I can't relate to the "bad girl" types of characters. If this story wanted to keep me interested, it needed to have more aspects to it (in these critical early chapters) than a laser-focus on the "bad girl" MC.

Stephen Leeds is perfectly sane. It's his hallucinations who are mad. A genius of unrivaled aptitude, Stephen can learn any new skill, vocation, or art in a matter of hours. However, to contain all of this, his mind creates hallucinatory people - Stephen calls them aspects - to hold and manifest the information. Then a company hires him to recover stolen property - a camera that can allegedly take pictures of the past....

not what I was expecting/hoping for
Revisado: 04-07-19
Four stars for the first story. It sets up a really interesting situation and is really pretty interesting. The second story is still pretty entertaining, but not quite as exciting. The third story gets two stars from me, because it kinda goes off into a different genre (straight sci-fi with no element of mystery) and has a whole lot of plot/worldbuilding/logistical problems. (The kind where all you can think after finishing the book is, "Wait, but why didn't he--? And at that point, wouldn't they have done--? And this happened there but earlier--?")
Basically, the first book kinda set up the expectation of the thing being all about a crazy guy solving crimes with his imaginary friends, which is fantastic and I was all in for, and then the book ... didn't really keep doing that.

didn't like the MC
Revisado: 04-07-19
I was a little iffy on this book for most of it, but the way the mystery played out made it a 3-star for me instead of a 2-star. It had me thinking it was going one way, then twisted around a bit at the end in a way I didn't expect, which is always desirable in this genre. My main problem with it was that I just didn't like the main character. He flirts and has casual sex with multiple women (not at the same time, but within very short time periods). He's still in love with his ex-wife, which to me would mean that he should try to see about figuring out how to make things work with her, but instead he just has sex with her sometimes, so their whole relationship is super weird and off-putting. He kisses and gets pretty flirty with another woman. Meanwhile, he has casual sex with a third woman he barely knows, only to go back to the flirty situation with the other woman literally the next day. The way he treats women is just super weird and kinda jerky to me. He doesn't think of it that way, and he's clearly meant to be a sympathetic character, but when you've got that many women that you're playing with at the same time, you're going to make me think of you as a jerk, regardless of your general mood/attitude about it.

Before long, she meets a man who might just be the one - he’s hilarious, quick-witted, and full of heart. I know happily for now endings are becoming more popular, but for me they're really not satisfying. I need a HEA in my romances. Also, I don't think this author understands how Photoshop works.

Quite entertaining
Revisado: 12-02-18
Really amusing sci-fi satire. The author does a good job narrating, too, with good voices for everyone. (Though I did speed it up to 1.35x. No, I didn't *need* to, but if you're familiar with the author on YouTube, you can probably guess why I did it anyway.) It wraps everything up pretty well at the end, but definitely hints toward a sequel. (I actually didn't really understand what the last scene was about, but it sounded like it was all sequel setup. Which I'm fine with, provided a sequel is forthcoming. Which I hope it is at some point.)
