good idea, mediocre execution
Revisado: 10-21-23
I liked the idea of a compilation of Moriarty stories within the crime world, showing off his deductive skills that rival Sherlock Holmes'. Unfortunately, the stories lacked a hook to keep me interested and engaged.

Historia
Twelve-year-old Ana-Marie Jin, the reigning US Juvenile figure skating champion, is not a frilly dress kind of kid. So, when Ana learns that next season's program will be princess themed, doubt forms fast. Still, Ana tries to focus on training and putting together a stellar routine worthy of national success. Once Ana meets Hayden, a transgender boy new to the rink, thoughts about the princess program and gender identity begin to take center stage.

Amazing story and message
Revisado: 04-21-23
Ana on the Edge was a great story about a 12 year old kid navigating coming out as non-binary while training as a competitive figure skater. Ana begins to realize she (she ultimately decides to use she/her pronouns for now) doesn't feel like a girl or a boy when Hayden, a trans-boy who just moved to the area, mistakes her for a boy. Ana loves skating but begins to struggle when the stress of everything becomes overwhelming. And when I say everything, I do mean everything: guilt over how hard her single mom works to pay for her dreams, an absent father, lying (by omission) to Hayden, a strained relationship with her best friend, feeling disconnected and trapped by her new free skate program and costume, worrying about how everyone will react when she comes out, and not being 100% sure of who she really is. Ana is both strong and vulnerable with a supportive community of family and friends. I thought this book was fantastic, especially for intermediate or middle grade kids, or even younger strong readers. Ana's story could be a reassuring connection for someone asking themselves similar questions or a good window to help build understanding, empathy and acceptance in someone who hasn't shared similar experiences or thoughts. At the end of the book, the author talked about their own experience coming out as a trans-man and then later realizing he was non-binary. Their message was ultimately that you decide who you are and it is okay if who that is changes over time. I loved this message.

not my cup of tea
Revisado: 09-08-18
The performance was well done but the story was slow and I didn't like the characters enough to care what happened to them. Still, I could see how it would appeal to some.
