Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Warning - Rape
Revisado: 08-26-24
I can't believe I am giving a story about rape 3 stars and that I finished it. Usually, if I realize that dealing with rape is one of the main themes of a story, I listen no further. But the characters and historical context were compelling. If it hadn't been about rape, I would give it at least 4 starts. But rape is part of what these women endured. I loved the midwifery and strong female characters. I want to read more by Lawhon.

Revisado: 03-05-24
Bought it for the premise and Dean Koontz interview. But, as soon as I understood it was about a cop sexually torturing 11-year girls, I had to stop. I can't listen to books about torturing children.

Predictable Story - Poor Narration
Revisado: 01-05-24
I could tell in the first few minutes that the story would be predictable and the narration barely tolerable. The narrator pronounces the i's in like or wipe more like lack or wap. It didn't bother me at first, but after hours of the accent, I was cringing and wanting to shout the correct pronunciation. I should have just stopped reading (listening), but it's hard for me to not finish. Cool book cover.

Magical but child rape
Revisado: 11-26-22
The child rape is treated briefly and may be a spoiler. But I don't want to listen to any stories that include rape. Thought you might want to know. Otherwise the story is brilliant.

Narrator's Lack of Articulation - Very Distracting
Revisado: 05-23-22
I am 4 hours in to the book and will probably finish. The story is interesting. But I am continuously distracted by how often one of the narrators slurs the words, especially contractions. I can't imagine the author allowing her work to be published with this reading. I wish I knew which of the narrators it was and I would avoid any future books read by her.

It's about rape
Revisado: 09-25-21
I don't usually listen to books that include a rape. I started to return this one. But, I made it through ... very uncomfortably at times. I have loved the Alan Gregory series and will finish it.

Beware - Same book as Lion
Revisado: 05-16-20
I realized after a couple of hours that I had already listened to this book. After some searching, I found "Lion" in my Audible library - exact same book, author and narrator. The release date is 12-27-15 for Lion. This version (A Long Way Home) shows a release date of 6-12-14. It's a delightful and amazing story. I agree that is longer than it needs to be and there is some repetition, but I still recommend it. But it's frustrating that I bought it twice. I'll return this one.
