Historia
Offering a nuanced and transformative take on immigration, multiculturalism, and America's role on the global stage, The Newcomers follows and reflects on the lives of 22 immigrant teenagers throughout the course of their 2015-2016 school year at Denver's South High School. Unfamiliar with American culture or the English language, the students range from the ages of 14 to 19 and come from nations struggling with drought, famine, or war.

Great read!

What a wonderful intimate look to refugees in America. This books offers a window into the challenges and obstacles they face bit also their complex understanding of surviving.
It reaffirmed the experiences I’ve had working with Newcomers and gave me hope for their future!

Historia
Maria Hinojosa is an award-winning journalist who, for nearly 30 years, has reported on stories and communities in America that often go ignored by the mainstream media - from tales of hope in the South Bronx to the unseen victims of the war on terror and the first detention camps in the US. Best-selling author Julia Álvarez has called her “one of the most important, respected, and beloved cultural leaders in the Latinx community”. In Once I Was You, Maria shares her intimate experience growing up Mexican American on the South Side of Chicago.

Survival!
Revisado: 06-01-23
What a story!! It is a raw, enraging and vulnerable story woven through the atrocities immigrants face at their arrival to this land of opportunities. I appreciated her transparency and facts about our country’s very imperfect systems. Her voice and emotion adds to the story telling. I very much recommend it!
