Wonderful
Revisado: 11-15-22
Saying that Brando Sando wrote a wonderful novella feels redundant at this point; the poor man has set expectations for his work so high that it practically feels arbitrary to mention it here, especially because it's about such an interesting character.
So, instead of adding to the authors already gargantuan (and clearly well deserved) fanfare, I'd like to point out the voice actors ability. Her words breathed life into the character even beyond what was written. Her vernacular, intonations, and cadence (what I imagine to be the most valuable metrics to measure the skill of a voice actor by) were such that our young protagonist felt deeper and more dynamic than if I'd simply read it. Even down to the duration of certain consonants the performer eloquently breezed across, she made little Lift sound as carefree and youthful as the author wrote her. It's one thing to be able to read out loud in a genuinely compelling fashion, but to cultivate an entire voice for a character with such a fascinating way of thinking is something truly special.
Intro to end note, I found myself genuinely gruntled by this production during a particularly difficult moment in my life and am immensely grateful for the repose I found in their work.

Historia
Pendt Harland's family sees her as a waste of food on their long-haul space cruiser when her genes reveal an undesirable mutation. But if she plays her cards right, she might have a chance to do much more than survive. During a space-station layover, Pendt escapes and forms a lucky bond with the Brannick twins, the teenage heirs of the powerful family that owns the station. Against all odds, the trio hatches a long-shot scheme to take over the station and thwart the destinies they never wished for.

I wish there was more.
Revisado: 07-16-22
Interesting premise, thought provoking, and tackles sensitive issues with the forwardness of a battle axe but the grace of a scalpel. The trigger warning at the start is warranted, though, even with the aforementioned grace with which those issues were addressed. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone with certain *cough* controlling *cough* political views on people's bodies, as this is a story about the liberation of bodily autonomy.
I wouldn't quite define it as SciFi, since I prefer to think of similar titles as space fantasy (think starwars) due to the existence of a magical system that doesn't necessarily hinge on an advancement in technology. That said, the technology in the universe is certainly more advanced than ours and the author entwines both to weave an intricate and fascinating backdrop for the story to take place in. Specifically I appreciated the unusual political circumstances that were enabled by the setting.
The protagonists were, perhaps, the most vibrant aspect of the storytelling. I quickly found myself very invested in their character arcs and struggles, beyond simply liking them. The story really shone in the small moments of celebrating simple agency and autonomy, brilliantly using the magical system to create a philosophical circumstance to explore the self-determination so central to the plot.
All in all, I think it was refreshing and tasteful. I've already seen a few reviews by people who get mad over certain issues that they insist are political and "irrelevant to the plot", but those sorts tend to get offended by anything that doesn't exclusively represent them and their politics; their reviews don't carry significant weight for this reason, by my estimation. My only real criticism is that it was too short and I was left wanting more.

Historia
The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout best seller Illuminae continues onboard the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault. Hanna is the station captain's pampered daughter, Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy's most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.

Worth listening to dozens of times.
Revisado: 05-27-22
There is so much packed into these books, this one in particular being my favorite, that one pass isn't enough to do it justice. The stories written between the 'documents' are vibrant and subtle. The voices both in the writing and in the performance bring the the story to life in a way seldom seen in audiobooks.
I ended up redoing my review because simply giving it 5 stars didn't do it justice. I really hope the authors end up making something similar again.

Historia
The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain. When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed.

Struggled to find an honest criticism.
Revisado: 10-20-21
The exclusive criticism that I could dredge up is wishing the character voices were more distinct.
Amazing story and the narrator did an phenomenal job with the internal monologue and explosive dialogue from the main character. The world building was truly gripping and the depth of the characters with their struggles sucks you in with inexorable power. On a few occasions I managed to embarrass myself by whooping out loud while walking to work, and even managed to hurt myself falling off the edge of the literal seat that I'd been precariously perched on (worth it on each occasion, of course).
The author smashed through every controversial topic the book brushed on with the same reckless abandon yet surprising grace that brought protagonist into vivid focus.
My only regret is starting the series while I'll still have to wait for future installations.

This story really shown in terms of world building and character developement. While perhaps there was room in the series for more wrenching twists and melancholy loss, it ended up with its own ashes in what was honestly a delightful story.
It was fluff, but I loved it. Great message too.
