I really wanted to like this story. The premise seemed promising and I assumed it could lead to a cute and maybe amusing romance story. It almost did. I liked the main male character. He was little flawed but sensitive enough to make you care. The main female character appeared to be trying to find herself. Unfortunately, what I found was a woman that was a little too weak and passive. There were a few situations where she was around men who were attempting to dominate and control her through their actions and demeaning comments. Her responses, in my opinion, were lackluster and therefore slightly unbelievable. Especially her response to being demeaned. At any moment, I expected her to just roll over and play dead. Until that point in the story, I was enjoying the build up of the romance. Afterwards, I struggled to hang in there since I was close to the end and I wanted to see how the author wrapped up the loose ends. So suffice it to say, the author did keep my interest. Had the woman been less passive and more sure of herself, I would have truly enjoyed this story. The narrator -- well, maybe she read the way she did to portray a weak woman, but I had a hard time listening to her because she succeeded. That whispering voice began to grate on my nerves right along with the main female character.

I'd like to wrap this up by saying something positive. The story really was actually sweet. The romance, although a little rushed, was believable. The chemistry between the two characters was evident and could be felt. The sex, well, don't play this out loud around children unless you're in the mood to explain the birds, the bees and where honey comes into play. I think most would enjoy the story line and overlook the female's flaws. So you might want to try it yourself and see if it works for you.

The characters were interesting, and the story had promise of a grand adventure but it didn't quite deliver for me. There was a lot going on and there was some good action but I had a hard time believing that an individual would be so passive when it came to getting out of scrapes, that they would just go with the flow and let circumstances -- or a rescue -- dictate his/her fate. The elements of unrequited romance were hinted at throughout but took too long to deliver. The characters themselves were somewhat enjoyable but the story could have been better. The narrator on the other hand, did a great job which helped keep me listening.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Commodore James. His narration was very distracting and not good at all. I almost stopped listening just to avoid his voice. However, since others raved about the story, I forced myself to continue in hopes the story was good.

Would you recommend Grim to your friends? Why or why not?

No, but primarily because this isn't their genre of book. Nothing to do with the story itself. If I had friends that did read this genre, I would suggest they read it rather than listen to Mr. James' reading. That was too distracting.

What didn’t you like about Commodore James and Laura Jennings ’s performance?

The "raspy" voice that Commodore used was very distracting; almost laughable if it weren't so bad. Sounded as if I was listening to Batman (Christian Bale) read a book to me. I had no problem with Laura Jenning's performance.

Did Grim inspire you to do anything?

No.

Any additional comments?

The story was good though, in my opinion, not as good as the high reviews would have you believe. But would I try this author again? Yes. Just not with Mr. James as narrator. Without that distraction, I might have enjoyed the story more.

I like zombie stories, so that was a selling point for this book. I also appreciated the humor that was included at appropriate points. Unfortunately where this story fell short was in the delivery of the back story. There was just too much of it. Further it was delivered in the middle of a potential threat / danger scene. When zombies are a clear and present danger in the moment, I don't want that scene interrupted with what happened years ago between characters. Once or twice might not be bad but it happened all throughout the book. It took away the urgency and excitement of the situation and made the story drag. Personally I didn't care about the backstory; I just wanted to know how the characters were going to get out of a sticky situation. Not bad overall, but I can't recommend if you want excitement.

If you could sum up Three Weeks with Lady X in three words, what would they be?

Touching and fun.

What other book might you compare Three Weeks with Lady X to and why?

None in particular come to mind, but if you like historical romances, you'll like this book. The romantic "chase" was entertaining, the twists in the plot were cute, and the attraction between the characters was easily understandable. The occasional use of note writing to communicate added an unexpected but very much appreciated touch of humor.

Which character – as performed by Susan Duerden – was your favorite?

The characters were all entertaining and they contributed to the story nicely, but I'd have to go with India, one of the main characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Love lessons.

Any additional comments?

I'd recommend this book to a friend.

If you could sum up Outage Boxed Set: Books 1-3 in three words, what would they be?

Entertaining, suspenseful, scary.

What did you like best about this story?

While part of the story line was predictable, this was nonetheless good enough to hold my attention. There was enough suspense and action to hold my interest, and I could not figure out who all of the "bad guys" were. That kept me on edge and anxious at times about what would happen next. In addition, just when you thought the story was over, something else happened. Since I enjoyed the storyline, I was happy it didn't end too soon.

Have you listened to any of Troy Duran’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first with this narrator but it was enjoyable. He did a great job in dragging me into the story, which is what kept me on edge. I felt as if I was there witnessing the action.

If you could rename Outage Boxed Set: Books 1-3, what would you call it?

When Darkness Falls. :)

Any additional comments?

Great book. Looking for more from this author.

Would you listen to Alien: Out of the Shadows again? Why?

Yes, I would listen to this audio book again to see if I missed anything and for pure enjoyment. I thoroughly enjoyed the dramatization, including the special effects. Those elements helps draw the listener into the story. I only wish the story had been longer.

What other book might you compare Alien: Out of the Shadows to and why?

It's not as good as, but it is in the same realm as "We're Alive: A Story of Survival." I compare the two because of the full cast and special effects. The story elements on both are dramatic, suspenseful, and very intense at times -- all of which make for a riveting storyline. Note: We're Alive is not a space opera, so don't look for it thinking you'll get that. But it is an excellent thriller.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Escape attempts in any story are always "moving". Beyond that, I wouldn't say more for fear of revealing information about the story that readers should be left to uncover on their own.

Any additional comments?

I appreciate Audible's production of full cast, dramatizations of audio books. When done well, as with this book, it heightens my enjoyment of the story. I hope they continue to develop more, especially those that are lengthy (5 hours and more).

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, but I would first ensure that they understood it is erotica. Overall, I enjoyed the storyline and the characters. You get a flavor of what a post-apocalyptic world would be like, and the daily grind that comes with survival under such circumstances. The realities of life in these characters' world are harsh. There is violence, and the typical problems you expect to encounter when resources are scarce, government has collapsed, and criminal minds take control. Some characters fall in line like sheep, while others fight back. Some also find release in sex... over and over again. Yes, there's a lot of that. A few characters made decisions based solely on fear or stupidity, which I found irritating, but not enough to take away my enjoyment. I kept reading to see if they matured and survived.

Would you be willing to try another book from Shoshanna Evers? Why or why not?

Most definitely. This trilogy was entertaining enough that I would purchase another book.

Which scene was your favorite?

Without giving away too much, it involved self-preservation, fighting back and escape.

Do you think The Pulse Trilogy Complete Set needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, I actually started looking for a follow-up book before I was finished reading the last of the trilogy. Some of the characters experienced growth and maturity during the story. It would be interesting to see how far along they have gone on that journey. It would also be interesting to see if the survivors have been successful in getting society back to some sense of normalcy, or if their lives have been changed forever more.

Any additional comments?

Readers beware. If you do not like to read erotica, then do not pick up this book. It has that in spades. If you do not mind reading erotica, give the book a try. It will keep you entertained until you get to the last page.

What did you love best about The Killer?

The pace of the storyline. I really enjoy stories with a lot of movement/action, and this story delivered. Every event, action, and conversation was linked together in a way that made sense and moved the story forward quickly. The characters were strong and easily distinguishable from each other so it was easy to quickly figure out who you liked and who you didn't. Even though the story is about a man we should despise, it was still easy to relate to him, his thoughts and feelings. In a world where he's typically the hunter, he had to deal with the fact that he was being hunted. The author takes you along for the ride, making you feel as if you're in the midst of chaos with him. You're there with the assassin, as he has to figure out how to get out of a number of bad situations that could result in his demise with one bad decision.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The assassin, Victor. He was cool, calm, collected, and very lethal. Despite his occupation, you still saw a glimpse of his compassion which made you wonder what led him to the life he led. He wasn't perfect, but he was cool.

Which scene was your favorite?

There were so many, but one that stands out is when he thought he could take a moment to relax only to discover that a pretty good trap had been set to kill him. His ability to discern what isn't obvious, to find the trap and come up with a great way to get himself out of it, was good.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When he had to make a decision -- try to save the life of his unintended "companion" -- which could result in his own death, or leave the "difficult" individual on their own. His choice gave you a glimpse into who the man really is.

Any additional comments?

Before I finished reading the book, I searched for and found -- to my relief, there are other books in this series. I already bought book 2. This author is good.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

While my time wasn't wasted, this is not the best of Julie Garwood's books that I've ever read. The story actually started off pretty good, but began to fizzle in the middle. There was little build up to support the speed with which the characters fell in love, so their "love" seemed a tad rushed. I actually liked the main female character, Judith, but she had a very irritating habit of whispering almost everything she said. That got old very quickly. Her love interest, Iain, was likeable as well, but neither really came to life. However, it was decent enough that I wanted to finish it rather than just put it aside.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting aspect of this story was the unfolding of the "secret". The least interesting was how it was revealed and dealt with. I expected more drama than what was delivered.

What aspect of Susan Duerden’s performance would you have changed?

Her performance was fine. I can't think of anything I would want changed.

Could you see The Secret being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

No way. There's not enough of a good story there to keep a viewer's interest in a movie or TV series.

Any additional comments?

While I won't say the credit spent on the book was a waste, I will say, if you're looking for a lot of excitement and a compelling love story, start with something else first. Save this book for when you've plowed through the other great books in your stack and need something to pass the time.
