Historia

Historia
Khrushchev's 1959 trip across America was one of the strangest exercises in international diplomacy ever conducted. He told jokes, threw tantrums, sparked a riot in a San Francisco supermarket, wowed coeds in an Iowa home-economics class, and ogled Shirley MacLaine. He befriended and offended a cast of characters including Nelson Rockefeller and Marilyn Monroe. The trip took place in the 50s, with the shadow of the hydrogen bomb hanging over his visit like the Sword of Damocles.

Fun (because it’s the past) but still scary
Revisado: 10-31-20
K (the man) was amusing until he went off his trolley at the UN, And the reader forgets that this guy’s arms were “up to the elbows” in blood (as K himself admits). This book is good fun and valuable history read by one of the all time great narrators.

Historia
Often called "Accident Park", "Class Action Park", or "Traction Park", Action Park was an American icon. Entertaining more than a million people a year in the 1980s, the New Jersey-based amusement playland placed no limits on danger or fun, a monument to the anything-goes spirit of the era that left guests in control of their own adventures - sometimes with tragic results. Action Park is the first-ever unvarnished look at the history of this DIY Disneyland, as seen through the eyes of Andy Mulvihill, the son of the park's idiosyncratic founder, Gene Mulvihill.

If you grew up in the '70s, it's a must
Revisado: 07-20-20
And if you are from NJ! (Especially West Orange)
After all the Weird NJ and Star Ledger articles, what else is there to say?
A lot ---and this first hand account will certainly take your mind off our current troubles for a few hours.
It seems like there is enough compelling material about the Mulvihill family for several books. The author's grandfather, a real gentleman, was my neighbor, and I still remember visiting his basement arcade at age 4 (1970). I didn't know he had been a boxer and union organizer.

Historia
Spanning the years between 1968 and 1976, these never-before-published letters show Thompson building his legend: running for sheriff in Aspen, Colorado; creating the seminal road book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas; twisting political reporting to new heights for Rolling Stone; and making sense of it all in the landmark Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72.

M. Hilgartner more than makes this work--remember this is HST's letters, a real mixed bag. Great fun.

Good book, Grover makes it great.
Revisado: 08-06-18
This is a fun, informal --but certainly not trivial history. I know a bit about the time, and I don't see too many errors that should trouble the nonacademic. Gardner's narration captures the author's wit, humanity, and wisdom (remember, the book dates from the early 1940s, so cut Durant some slack).

Historia
Home Fires is the powerful saga of the Gordon family--real people, names unchanged. Spanning nearly five decades, from the end of World War II to the early 1990s, their story has the scope, depth, wealth of incident, and emotional intensity of a great novel, and an abundance of humor, scandal, warmth, and trauma--the recognizable components of family life. This is also a masterful chronicle of the turbulent postwar era, illuminating the interplay between private life and profound cultural changes.

If you could sum up Home Fires in three words, what would they be?
Like being there
What did you like best about this story?
The people, especially Mr.and Mrs. Gordon and the depiction of the 60s-70s.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narrator takes a few risks with the voices / accents. I think they work. Overall, he does a wonderful job. I'll look for for his other titles.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
How do you feel after an O'Neill play or a Roth novel?

Historia
In the early 1970s, Britain seemed to be tottering on the brink of the abyss. Under Edward Heath, the optimism of the '60s had become a distant memory. Now the headlines were dominated by strikes and blackouts, unemployment and inflation. As the world looked on in horrified fascination, Britain seemed to be tearing itself apart. And yet, amid the gloom, glittered a creativity and cultural dynamism that would influence our lives long after the nightmarish '70s had been forgotten.

Where does Seasons in the Sun rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The best--I would have paid full price for it!
Who was your favorite character and why?
All of them--uh, except the killers. I mean I felt a degree of sympathy for nearly all of the political figures.
What does David Thorpe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Thorpe's impersonations! I've been listening almost nonstop. I hope he is recording another work of nonfiction by Sandbrook right now!
