Historia
Laurence Sterne’s most famous novel is a biting satire of literary conventions and contemporary 18th-century values. Renowned for its parody of established narrative techniques, Tristram Shandyis commonly regarded as the forerunner of avant-garde fiction. Tristram’s characteristic digressions on a whole range of unlikely subjects (including battle strategy and noses!) are endlessly surprising and make this one of Britain’s greatest comic achievements.

Spectacular!
Revisado: 01-27-21
I wouldn't have thought that this intensely *literary* novel, with its zigzags, lists, fragments of other genres, borrowings, typographical play and all would adapt well to performance. But Anton "Qyburn" Lesser does a spectacular job capturing its many moods, velocities and voices. Get this one--dive in head first.

Before it was a religion, a culture, or even a system of meditation, what was Buddhism? On Buddhism Without Beliefs, celebrated teacher, translator, and former Buddhist monk Stephen Batchelor takes us back to the first years after the Buddha's awakening to reveal the root insights of Buddhism hidden beneath centuries of history and interpretation.

Talks, not the book.
Revisado: 09-03-17
This is a series of talks with partially overlapping content as the audio/book of the same title. But it was enough different and indeed more provocative that I was glad I had bought both (probably by mistake).

Historia
Rumi's Spiritual Verses is the greatest mystical poem in Islamic culture - and of all time. Rumi examines our human separation from reality, love, and truth. He shows how love - neither erotic nor sentimental but divine, by which the universe is held together - enlightens ignorance and dissolves suffering. The first book of the Masnavi is the key to the whole work: It takes off from simple, amusing tales into realms unimaginable, but wholly familiar to the human heart.

meant for listening
Revisado: 08-07-15
Rumi's verse was meant for listening; just turn it on and flow with the river of words. This is the only decent translation into English verse out there. The others are either doggerel or "versions" that owe more to the versioneer than to the Persian original. The narrator does a good job capturing some of the many voices that are speaking through the verses. It's not quite complete version of Books 1 and 2, though. Hoping for more!--when Williams finishes translating the remaining books, they should sign up Lesser again. Fifty hours of Masnavi would be just about enough.
