Historia
North Korea is isolated and hungry, bankrupt and belligerent. It is also armed with nuclear weapons. Between 150,000 and 200,000 people are being held in its political prison camps, which have existed twice as long as Stalin’s Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. Very few born and raised in these camps have escaped - but Shin Dong-hyuk did.

Worthwhile, but difficult on many levels.

This story doesn't flow well
Revisado: 01-09-15
What was most disappointing about Blaine Harden’s story?
He isn't a good storyteller. He strings facts together but fails to paint a picture with his words.
How could the performance have been better?
The author reads the story and I get the sense he is rushing to get it over with. He doesn't pause between many sentences and repeatedly mispronounces most of the Korean words.
Any additional comments?
The author's rushed reading and constant mispronunciations makes it seem like he doesn't have much respect for his own book. It's hard for me to have much either.

Historia
This is the story of mankind clawing for survival, of mankind on the edge. The world outside has grown unkind, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they profess to want: They are allowed outside.

Good story, poor performance
Revisado: 08-28-14
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Although I enjoyed the story, I felt that many times the narrator made it barely listenable. It didn't feel like she took the time to understand the characters before giving them very distinct voices and accents.
For example, Juliette who was raised in engineering was given an almost valley girl accent and attitude. Why would a girl raised around engines and grease talk like a spoiled rich girl??!!
The mayor was given a pronounced southern drawl and an asian girl was given a stilted asian accent that sounded like she learned English as a second language. These people have been living together with no outside influence for centuries and speaking the same language...they don't have strong differentiated accents anymore!!
A good narrator makes some differentiation in voices but doesn't take over the story with strong accents done poorly, especially when the accents don't even make sense in context.

Historia
It's the last ski weekend of the season and a mishmash of snow enthusiasts are on their way to a remote backwoods cabin. In an odd pilgrimage through the mountains, the townsfolk of Coalton - from the ski bum to the urbanite - embark on a bizarre adventure that walks the line between comedy and tragedy. In a blend of mordant humor and heartbreak, Angie Abdou chronicles a day in the life of these industrious few as they attempt to conquer the mountain.

Any additional comments?
Really enjoyed the story and the performance was pretty solid.
The one thing that really bugged me was that Marcie Millard didn't learn the Canadian word "toque" which comes up often in the book. She pronounces it like "toke" but it should be said "took" with long U sound.
When a word comes up that often in a book and you don't know how to pronounce it, it only makes sense to look it up before reading it wrong dozens of times. This probably only bothers Canadians and others who know the word "toque". Other than that I found the book to be very enjoyable.
