Great book not so great narrator

Great book not so great narrator

The story is amazing and you should definitely read it. It’s a great continuation of the first volume and leaves you wanting more.
The narrator on the other hand isn’t great. It becomes hard to tell who is talking or even which character is talking. He has one sorta female voice for the female characters but even then he tends to switch to a male voice when more than one lady is talking. He doesn’t keep the character voices consistent, in one scene where two guys are talking he uses a Gruff voice for the older guy and his regular voice for the younger guy. Halfway through the conversation the younger guy has a gruff voice and the older guy has a regular voice. The narrator needs to work on widening his range of voices and keep the voices consistent with the characters that use that voice. His reading speed and the emotion that he puts into the characters is good and doesn’t need any work.

Chase had it all planned out. Do a little time in one of the emperor's jails, say a four-year stretch, for getting rid of some trash that no one would miss, and when he got out, the path to leadership would be wide open. Unfortunately, his bastard of a father, the same one who left his mother to die in poverty and him to run wild on the streets, took an interest. Seeing him sitting on the bench when his case went to court was a shock. But not as big a shock as being sentenced to ten years in the Imperial Navy.

Great story but the voice actor not so much

The story was great which is not a big surprise since everything I've read from John Van Stry / Jan Stryvant is great. the voice actor on the other hand could be better. there was little to no difference between male and female voices which could get confusing on who was speaking. Now he does try to have the male voices sound different and a few do but the majority are in his reading voice. He doesn't really have any female voices, if any, in his retinue of character voices which makes it hard to tell if the person who is speaking is a girl or a guy. The emotion that the characters express does come through so he doesn't have a monotone voice which is the only thing keeping the performance at two stars.
I hope the voice actor can diversify his range of voices in the next volume otherwise I may stick to just reading them

Needs a different narrator

You are better off using text to speech than listening to the narrator of this book. There’s no way to tell who is talking with one Sentence blending into another. There’s random pause which ruin the flow of the story. Like I said at the beginning you are better off getting the book then using the text to speech option on kindle.
