I will start by stating that I picked up this book because one of my best friends narrated this book. I cannot rightly say that I am unbiased, but I do listen to a LOT of audiobooks. It's effectively the only way I read. I hear many masters of their craft and Aaron LaPacz is not one of them. He is new to this, relatively speaking, and it shows. He has a lot of work to do before he is on the same level as people like Tim Gerard Reynolds, Simon Vance, Michael Kramer, and Kate Reading. That being said, Aaron has been a stage actor for quite some time and this isn't his first rodeo when it comes to conveying emotion through his voice. He does a great job considering this is his first novel reading, and I look forward to seeing how he grows as a narrator. The few minor mistakes he makes in this reading are minor compared to the things that he does really well. Give him a shot. Everyone needs to start somewhere! As for the book itself, it's worth the read! The story is short and sweet, characters compelling, and the plot gets tied up neatly and ends in a satisfying way. Enjoy!

So far my favorite entry into the series! Things get real in this book and I'm thrilled to see where it goes!

Every time I find myself thinking "of course Selena is 'blank' I find myself regretting that train if thought. There are a lot of instances where she is exceedingly good at something only to fall flat on her face doing something else. She isn't a self insert blank canvas for any reader to take advantage of. She has more depth than I initially gave her credit for, and I'm looking forward to more of this story in this world, and to seeing how the author develops since I was told by fans of the series that this first book is rough around the edges. While I can agree with that statement, I won't know just how rough until I have a better frame of reference from future entries in the series.

One of the things that really stands out about these books is how relentless the story gets. It is almost exhausting. Almost. The pacing is on point and the action feels like it never stops. I find myself feeling so much sympathy for the heroes because they go through trial after trial that it feels like they can't possibly continue, but they persist, which I love. This book does not disappoint!

What a great follow-up to a great first book. I'm stand by the title of this review that if no other Greatcoat book came out I'd be satisfied with the wholeness of the story. There is clearly more to do in the world, but the ending was so satisfying and I really hope books 3 and 4 live up to the first two.

If you are looking for the most innovative fantasy trilogy, look elsewhere. However, if you want something that is entertaining and fun, this is it! Nightfall is a satisfying conclusion to the series. I'm afraid it will ultimately be forgettable in the long run, but if you have credits to spend, this trilogy is easily worth 3 of them.

Overall, it was a fantastic read. I am not upset that TGR is doing all of the reading like some people. With the struggles of the VAs in the last two books, it felt like the right call to just have one this time around. I'll miss the old VA for Lysander from Dark Age, but that's about it.

My least favorite of Lawrence's books, and yet...

...and yet he sticks the landing. I never thought I'd call a book by Mark Lawrence boring at any point, but this one in particular has some boring moments that made me wonder if this would be his first ever flop. It was not! The structure of the story doesn't do its pacing any favors, and that's really the only flaw I can find. The reason for the structure is 100% justified by the content therein, so it can't even really be a complaint from me because his usual brilliant writing shows up with how everything ties together in the end. There are other minor things I could nitpick, like Livira having some strong parallels to Nona at the beginning, but I'm starting to think that was on purpose. I can't wait for the rest of the story to unfold. Guess we'll see in 2025 what happens!

As with the first two books, this story is funny and gritty, and the world building is just so interesting! I still want more from this world!

This is effectively the only evolutionary psychology book you will ever need to read if you want a basic understanding of what the field is all about. Obviously, there is always more material to read, but if you want to understand the basics and be able to form an opinion on the field, this is a great place to start. Especially because it's coming from a person with no agenda beyond forming a good, nuanced argument in favor of the field's validity. If you are concerned that this is some Alt-Right dog whistle of a book, fear not. If you are concerned that this is some New Age mumbo jumbo, fear not. If you are concerned that this will undermine your view of humanity and why we are the way we are... this book will be worth the read.
