Historia
The 15th century saw the longest and bloodiest series of civil wars in British history. The crown of England changed hands five times as two branches of the Plantagenet dynasty fought to the death for the right to rule. Now, celebrated historian Dan Jones describes how the longest reigning British royal family tore itself apart until it was finally replaced by the Tudors. Some of the greatest heroes and villains in history were thrown together in these turbulent times.

Great history to understand how the Tudors got into power and a bit of how Cromwell got as far as he did.

Historia
In 1945, after his capture at the end of the Second World War, Hermann Göring arrived at an American-run detention center in war-torn Luxembourg, accompanied by 16 suitcases and a red hatbox. The suitcases contained all manner of paraphernalia: medals, gems, two cigar cutters, silk underwear, a hot water bottle, and the equivalent of $100,000,000 in cash. Hidden in a coffee can, a set of brass vials housed glass capsules containing a clear liquid and a white precipitate: potassium cyanide. Joining Göring in the detention center were the elite of the captured Nazi regime....

Good introduction to criminology
Revisado: 12-24-23
It refers to Roschach tests with few specifics. Much of the forensic work discussed would be considered sham science in a modern court of law.
There is much discussion of the psychopathology of Dr Kellywithout as much discussion of the difficulty of professionals. Sometimes the cobbler needs a pair of shoes that he can’t make for himself.

In 1984, Michael Vickers took charge of the CIA’s secret war against the Soviets in Afghanistan. After inheriting a strategy aimed at imposing costs on the Soviets for their invasion and occupation of Afghanistan, Vickers transformed the covert campaign into an all-out effort to help the Afghan resistance win their war. More than any other American, he was responsible for the outcome in Afghanistan that led to the end of the Cold War. In By All Means Available, Vickers recounts his remarkable career.

This guy managed to be involved in pretty much every disaster and triumph of the past 50 years. He offers very good insights and opinions, not all that are agréable.
He comments on leaders current and past.
There is a certain amount of well earned braggadocio. Enjoy

Historia
December 1944: Deep in the Ardennes forest, a platoon of 18 men under the command of 20-year-old lieutenant Lyle Bouck huddle in their foxholes. Under attack and vastly outnumbered, they repulse three German assaults in a fierce day-long battle, killing more than 500 Germans. Only when Bouck's men run out of ammunition do they surrender. As POWs, Bouck's platoon experience an ordeal far worse than combat: trigger-happy German guards, Allied bombing raids, and a daily ration of thin soup. Somehow, the men of Bouck's platoon all miraculously survive.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Great story but…
Revisado: 05-12-22
The attempt to copy accents or women’s voices was irritating. Boris and Natasha from Squirrel and Moose interfered with the story.
The story is incredibly important in exposing corruption in business and politics. It could have been better. The allusion of men reporting abuse was dropped and deserved more “fleshing out.”

In the warm predawn darkness of June 22, 1941, three million men waited along a front hundreds of miles long, stretching from the Baltic coast of Poland to the Balkans. Ahead of them in the darkness lay the Soviet Union, its border guarded by millions of Red Army troops echeloned deep throughout the huge spaces of Russia.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Very challenging story
Revisado: 10-08-16
The author weaves three stories of creativity, psychosis and psychopathy together. The background story of the Chicago Worlds Fair is fascinating on its own. The psychotic man is a caution about the lack of treatment today. The psychopath /serial killer is well described, although with significant embellishment that will disgust/horrify many.

Perhaps I've been around too long
Revisado: 08-13-13
Back in early 70's, I was involved with NOW (National Organization for Women) and a wonderful girlfriend. South Carolina wasn't exactly the hotbed of FemLib. Our chatter about the need for advancing women was no different from Ms Sandberg. We felt it earnestly and believed we were breaking new ground.
So does Ms Sandberg.
40 years later, all this earnestness seems trite and simplistic.

Imagine how different your life would be if you could tell whether someone was lying or telling you the truth. Be it hiring a new employee, investing in a financial interest, speaking with your child about drugs, confronting your significant other about suspected infidelity, or even dating someone new, having the ability to unmask a lie can have far-reaching and even life-altering consequences. As former CIA officers, Philip Houston, Michael Floyd, and Susan Carnicero are among the world’s best at recognizing deceptive behavior.

Essential reading for physicians and therapists
Revisado: 03-14-13
This book uses a structured approach to interview and listening that should be in any physician's toolkit. As a psychiatrist, I often have to assess for risk of self harm or assault. As noted early in the book, the most important first step is a willingness to doubt the truthfulness of your subject. People contemplating self harm and assault are often deceptive about their symptoms and plans. People malingering self harm and assault are also deceptive.
Hence, this book can help train the interviewer to listen and observe clusters of symptoms consistent with lying and deception. In many ways, I think this book is an improvement over Roger's Clinical Assessment of Malingering and Deception with brevity and good use of examples.
Another review criticizes the references to 2 tables. This reference to the tables is not vital at all. The references are clear and concise.
I found this book very accessible at 1.5 to 2.0 X, but suggest reading/listening to it twice.

Historia
Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson ( Pulp Fiction) rocks this mock bedtime story, capturing a hilarious range of emotions as the voice of a father struggling to get his child to sleep. Go the F**k to Sleep is a bedtime book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don’t always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland.

A terrific release for the overwhelmed parent
Revisado: 10-25-11
This book will ring true for pretty much every parent who has been subjected to a cranky tired child who has been into the Halloween candy. This is a good way to process the frustration of sleep deprivation that follows the blessed arrival of a child into a home. This is NOT the story to read to that cherub, not matter how annoying he/she is.
It is great fun to play this for other parents.
