Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Couldn’t get into it
Revisado: 06-29-24
I tried to like this, but as hard as I tried, I couldn’t finish it. The story line is boring and the narrator is hard to listen to. Nothing redemptive about this book.

Historia
My little girl’s room is dark. Her bed is empty. I turn on her unicorn nightlight and bury my face in her pillow, my heart breaking. I know who did this. His name is Samuel Barlow. He has pale sallow skin and red-rimmed icy-blue eyes. But no one will listen. As darkness falls and rain lashes against the window, there’s a knock at my door and I open it to see those same eyes staring back at me. It’s his mother and she says she can help me find my daughter.

Underwhelming plot and over the top narration
Revisado: 09-02-22
This one took all I had to finish. The plot was quite underwhelming. How can something be so predictable and unbelievable at the same time?! And the narrator drove me insane…far far too dramatic. The constant wailing and seething anger was exhausting. I generally enjoy Slater’s books, but this one was quite disappointing.

Historia
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Great Storytelling
Revisado: 02-22-21
This one may surprise you. There is not much plot, and not even much characterization...but it’s a great story. Just darn good storytelling! Hated for it to be over.

Historia
On a night flight from London to Boston, Ted Severson meets the stunning and mysterious Lily Kintner. Sharing one too many martinis, the strangers begin to play a game of truth, revealing very intimate details about themselves. Ted talks about his marriage that's going stale and his wife, Miranda, who he's sure is cheating on him. Ted and his wife were a mismatch from the start - he the rich businessman, she the artistic free spirit - a contrast that once inflamed their passion but has now become a cliché.

Good story but awful reading
Revisado: 11-12-19
I thought the story was good, albeit a bit contrived. The plot and suspense kept me interested, and I liked the mingling of lives and varying perspectives. The readers were awful, though, particularly Lilly. The inflection was unbearable. Just read and speak in a normal voice! Faith’s reading was equally as bad. She sounded like she had a bad hangover and could barely speak over a whisper. Sounded like she was trying to disguise her voice. It was just terrible.

Refreshing story!
Revisado: 02-27-17
I was hesitant to read this because I was afraid it would be a sappy story, but I was wrong. The characters were well rounded, believable, and strong women (though vulnerable).

Historia
Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is 77 years old and crazy, standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus crazy. She is also Elsa's best and only friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother's stories, in the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

Too much fantasy but God story
Revisado: 02-20-17
I really enjoyed the reader!
Too much fantasy for my taste, though I appreciated the story line.
