Historia
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Eye Opening
Revisado: 09-12-24
I’ve never read 1984, so I cannot compare. This is an eye opening story.as it gives a lot to ponder over-especially in regards to government and political corruption. It’s also very sad and disturbing to listen to in dramatized form. It feels like you’re right there with them. Even though the performance was outstanding, at one point a sex scene is drawn out and sounded like listening to porn which I found uncomfortable, inappropriate and pointless. Spoilers: Moreover, I didn’t see much depth in Winston and Julia’s relationship. It was very physical and lustful at first. Then it was just talking about love and that they would die for one another. Were they truly in love or not? However, I think point of the story is they should have the freedom to love and the freedom to the pursuit of happiness but that it is nearly impossible under such oppression. Very sad ending.

Wow!
Revisado: 12-20-23
This audiobook is wonderful! The music was absolutely beautiful, and the story or stories were touching. I loved how everyone was connected through music and magic. It’s also fantastic historical fiction to help us remember the hard things we don’t ever want to repeat. My 15 year old daughter and I listened together, and she loved it. It inspired her to pull out her old harmonica and play some tunes from the print copy we have from the library. I’d say it’s a great read for the whole family middle grade and up.

Historia
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Best Performance
Revisado: 02-27-23
Andy Serkis is an incredible narrator. All the different voices and the songs were performed top notch. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have listened because fantasy novels aren’t my favorite. But his voice drew me in for my first time reading Tolkien. The story is written very well, but some of the battle scenes were drawn out too long.

Amazing Narration
Revisado: 10-05-21
The narrator was incredible!! His different voices for each person almost sounded like there was a full cast. Loved the story. I just wish the bad language had been left out. The whole family enjoyed it (mom and dad, 17 yr old, 13 yr old). Well done!!

Historia
As a 14-year-old who just moved to a new town, with no friends and a louse for an older brother, Doug Swieteck has all the stats stacked against him. So begins a coming-of-age masterwork full of equal parts comedy and tragedy from Newbery Honor winner Gary D. Schmidt. As Doug struggles to be more than the skinny thug that his teachers and the police think him to be, he finds an unlikely ally in Lil Spicer, a fiery young lady who smelled like daisies would smell if they were growing in a big field under a clearing sky after a rain.

One of the Best Books Ever
Revisado: 01-01-21
I am a mom who loved listening to this book with my 17 year old son. It’s our second Gary D. Schmidt book second to “The Wednesday Wars.” It’s a fantastic touching story, and the narrator is very engaging. My son kept asking me if we could play it, and I personally plan to listen to it again and again because I enjoy the way the author writes. I couldn’t help picture the main character older than he is in the book. I’m thinking 15 or 16 rather than an 8th grader. FYI, There are some spoilers to Jane Eyre which I’ve already read, so it didn’t affect me. However, I wouldn’t have liked that had I not read it since it’s one of my all-time favorite classics. Overall “Okay for Now” is one of the best books I’ve ever read! Highly recommend!

phenomenal performance
Revisado: 12-19-20
Rosamund Pike’s performance was phenomenal and such a delight. She really made the story accessible and does a fantastic job with the different voices for each character. I am sad it’s over and will look forward to listening again and again. It’s my first time ever reading this novel, though I’ve enjoyed it on screen many times. Grateful.

With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century.

Great but...
Revisado: 12-06-20
I noticed the narrator made many mistakes and even skipped entire lines of the text as I was reading along in my hard copy. But, her voices for all the characters was superb and her voice delightful. I enjoyed listening to it. Love the story as always.
