Historia
From best-selling author John U. Bacon, a gripping narrative history of the largest manmade detonation prior to Hiroshima. On Monday, December 3, 1917, the French freighter SS Mont-Blanc set sail from Brooklyn carrying the largest cache of explosives ever loaded onto a ship, including 2,300 tons of picric acid, an unstable, poisonous chemical more powerful than TNT.

Way more than I anticipated
Revisado: 07-30-21
I read and enjoy a ton of history books, and they can often become dry or overweight with minutiae. The length of this book had me worrying that that was the case. How can there be this much book for a lightning fast event?
I was wrong, and really this was one of the most interesting books I tackled last year. Not only does the author slow down the events to stack them up into a gripping narrative. He slows down to almost a “bullet time” account of the explosion itself. Leading us into a terrifying account from several perspectives.
The humanity the author accounts for before and after the event are rich with detail. And I came away with way more perspective on the event and how it shaped the world than I was anticipating.

fascinating and then you get shaken with context
Revisado: 12-06-20
this is a great collection and worth the price... that said the context added before and after every fireside chat is a bit unnecessary (and spoils what's to come)... also the horns of the speech institute (or whatever the hell they're called) theme music comes on twice per chat so at best it's tedious... if you get lulled into a trance by FDR's folksy chat and the vinyl pops the theme music crashing in after the chat can be jarring... twice i got a good audio jump scare.

Miss Remini could read me the phone book
Revisado: 02-16-19
I'm no fanboy of Leah Remini (maybe I had a mild crush on her saved by the Bell character when I was in middle school) and really only picked this up bc I find Scientology (and it's nasty bits) interesting.
There's a good mix of an extremely fascinating life growing up in Scientology, trying to make it in acting, Hollywood gossip, heartbreak, and some crazy stuff mixed in.
Leah Remeni is a lot funnier than I expected and her narration made me glad I went for the audiobook over printed word.
I'm not usually into autobiographies but this was one I couldn't put down.
