Historia
On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. But an attempt on the elderly man’s life sends Armand, his wife, Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades.

Engaging till the last microsecond
Revisado: 03-14-25
The complex plot was (as always) full of twists but to make the otherwise dry business of an engineering firm’s board meeting the peak of high tension was a masterstroke!

Historia
Jackson Brodie has relocated to a quiet seaside village, in the occasional company of his recalcitrant teenage son and an aging Labrador, both at the discretion of his ex-partner Julia. It's picturesque, but there's something darker lurking behind the scenes. Jackson's current job, gathering proof of an unfaithful husband for his suspicious wife, is fairly standard-issue, but a chance encounter with a desperate man on a crumbling cliff leads him into a sinister network—and back across the path of his old friend Reggie.

Engaging narrative
Revisado: 01-16-25
The characters are believable and the plot, though convoluted, does deliver a reasonable dénouement. Best of all was Jason Isaacs’ narration. He is marvellous.

Historia
In his sleepy Yorkshire town, ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off boredom and malaise. His only case is the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. But Jackson soon uncovers a string of unsolved art thefts that lead him down a dizzying spiral of disguise and deceit to Burton Makepeace, a formerly magnificent estate now partially converted into a hotel hosting Murder Mystery weekends.

Delightful
Revisado: 01-11-25
After a long time, here is a mystery story written with humour and a keen understanding of the stress of modern lives. There are deaths and even a murder or two but the mystery is about something other than the dreary business of jealous lovers and scheming heirs. And Jason Isaacs is fabulous! But then, he always is.

The best kind of magic
Revisado: 09-06-24
The story is immersive, the characters sharply drawn. I remained committed all the way through despite the plot looping in and out of itself. The narration however, was absolutely SUPERB. I have recommended the Audible version to friends as a superior alternative to the physical book!

Highly controlled suspense
Revisado: 08-05-24
Despite the unusual storyline - a cold blooded killer is the unlikely “hero” - the book has a quiet, dreamlike quality. It maintains the thread of suspense all the way through to the very end. Superbly performed.

Historia
In The Boy Who Followed Ripley, Highsmith explores Ripley's bizarrely paternal relationship with a troubled young runaway, whose abduction draws them into Berlin's seamy underworld. More than any other American literary character, Ripley provides "a lens to peer into the sinister machinations of human behavior." (John Freeman, Pittsburgh Gazette).

Cool, sad, taut
Revisado: 06-11-24
This was a strange story. I suspect it would only make sense to readers of the earlier Ripley books. I am sure that enjoyed it more as an audio title than I would have as a physical book. Something about the calm blandness of the narration, the deliberate and unhurried pace at which the tale unspools came through in the voice of the actor. It's very powerful but in a quiet and understated way.

Historia
It is the early spring of 2016 and Queen Elizabeth is at Windsor Castle in advance of her 90th birthday celebrations. But the preparations are interrupted when a guest is found dead in one of the Castle bedrooms. The scene suggests the young Russian pianist strangled himself, but a badly tied knot leads MI5 to suspect foul play was involved. The Queen leaves the investigation to the professionals—until their suspicions point them in the wrong direction. Unhappy at the mishandling of the case and concerned for her staff's morale, the monarch decides to take matters into her own hands.

I loved the personality of the Queen. It seemed warm and genuine. The story was good fun. The dénouement was slightly long-winded.

Historia
Tan Twan Eng's debut novel casts a powerful spell and has garnered comparisons to celebrated wartime storytellers Somerset Maugham and Graham Greene. Set during the tumult of World War II, on the lush Malayan island of Penang, The Gift of Rain tells a riveting and poignant tale about a young man caught in the tangle of wartime loyalties and deceits. In 1939, 16-year-old Philip Hutton - the half-Chinese, half-English youngest child of the head of one of Penang's great trading families - feels alienated from both the Chinese and British communities.

Delicious
Revisado: 06-03-23
This is a sumptuous performance. A bit like watching a film with the video turned off - but better! Bcz the images flash through one’s mind without the distraction of actors or camera angles or production values … while the words sizzle and bounce … and the dialogue becomes part of one’s DNA.

Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."
