Historia
As a seasoned paramedic and union leader, Anthony Almojera thought he could handle anything his job threw at him. Like many medical first responders, he came from a troubled background and carried the traumas of the city as well as its triumphs. He had grown up in the rough-and-tumble Park Slope of the 1980s, been homeless for a time, and had watched murder, addiction, and hopelessness consume those closest to him. But he had dedicated his life to helping people in need, and while every day was filled with tragedy—stabbings, shootings, accidents, suicides—it also brought moments of uplift.

Too Much Politics
Revisado: 12-28-24
I’m not judging Anthony, but I didn’t purchase this book to hear about his political views and criticism of several politicians, with one in particular over and over again. I did however, enjoy listening to his stories of the things he has experienced and the many lives he’s helped and saved, and I wholeheartedly thank him for his service.
I didn’t really enjoy the content of him complaining about how women have treated him, and how life has not been that fair to him. We’ve all gone through rough patches, some way more than others. I’ve personally come very close to death more times than I even want to think about, but I don’t dwell on the past, I move forward with a very positive attitude.
And my final thought: if I could not pronounce the word, “ask,” and instead said, “ax, or axed,” I would’ve hired someone to narrate for me. If it was a word he only used a few times, no biggie, but it was one of the most used words in the book. Again, I’m not judging the man, this is constructive criticism. Overall I think (dare I say it), Anthony has a bit of an ego.

Historia
Weaving a latticework of different strands, moving back and forth through time, Josh Brolin captures a life marked by curiosity, pain, devotion, kindness, humor. He recounts an unconventional childhood far from Hollywood. Raised on a ranch in Paso Robles, California, he was surrounded as a child by the wolves, cougars, and other wild animals gathered by his fearless and explosive mother, Jane Agee Brolin. Her tragic, early death haunts this book, and the force of her unforgettable personality is felt throughout.

Historia
What if a lot of what we’ve heard about wilderness therapy is wrong? That it shouldn’t be about finding oneself through hardship and challenge, but about finding a place of comfort instead? Florence goes backpacking in Colorado with an all-women’s group of sex-trafficking survivors through She Is Able, a nonprofit based in Atlanta, Georgia. The women and their guides, along with therapists who specialize in trauma and wilderness therapy, upend everything she thought she knew.

Didn’t realize this was for women only…
Revisado: 11-01-24
I stumbled upon this podcast, and was enjoying it, as I’ve been in recovery (ODAAT) for almost 20 years now. For all the years I used, I never abused my girlfriends, my wife, or any woman, as I just was raised right. I don’t want the reason I stopped listening to this to sound like I’m being sensitive, but the author of this episode should be ashamed of herself, as her comment, “men, who needs them,” is just contributing to all the bs going on in the world today. To paint with such a broad brush just because YOU ended up spending 20+ years with a bad seed isn’t fair towards all the other good men out there today. I’ve been divorced for 7 years and although I’m not desperate to find my “other half,” hearing comments like this from a sour grape just reminds me to do my due diligence before getting into a serious relationship with any woman. That’s so unfair towards all the good women out there, but as long as most women continue to be this way, they’re unfortunately going to miss out on having an AMAZING man in their lives. #nothingchangesifnothingchanges

Revisado: 09-24-24
In my opinion, it starts out a little convoluted, but he eventually catches my complete attention and never lost me after that. I love the realness of Michael, and the fact that he explains in detail what’s going on in his head. That’s pure vulnerability and honesty, and to me that’s what everyone writing a biography should be like, or don’t bother!! Great job Michael, I can so very much relate to your feelings on many occasions throughout this great book! God Bless You brother…

Historia
As lead singer and songwriter for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis has lived life on the razor's edge. Much has been written about him, but until now we've only had his songs as clues to his experience from the inside. In Scar Tissue, Kiedis proves himself to be as compelling a memoirist as he is a lyricist, giving us a searingly honest account of the life from which his music has evolved.

I could truly relate to Anthony’s story, well, other than I’m not a rockstar. 😆
I’ve been in recovery for a few 24 hours now, and the experiences he survived were similar. I can recall having a PICC line in my heart being fed with liquid “milk” in a bag through an IV for months at a time, walking through the streets of Boston ingesting Fentanyl before anyone even knew what it was. I am so happy for you Anthony, as ya can’t beat being sobah! 😆

Not long before her 50birthday, Mackenzie Phillips walked into Los Angeles International Airport. She was on her way to a reunion of One Day at a Time, the hugely popular 70s sitcom on which she once starred as the loveable rebel Julie Cooper. Within minutes, Mackenzie was in handcuffs, arrested for possession of cocaine and heroin. But the star who turned up High on Arrival has finally come back down to earth - to stay.

Real & Raw!
Revisado: 12-27-23
Being an addict/alcoholic in recovery myself, I could SO identify with Laura on many occasions and levels, as although we’re different people, the world of addiction can be so eerily similar. I loved the fact that MacKenzie really let it ALL out, as she must’ve felt so much better that she wasn’t hiding those demons deep down inside anymore! I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how disturbing it was to hear how her sorry excuse for a father raped her regularly, and even MORE disturbing when she said she eventually consented to it! There is no doubt that drugs and booze took me to places that I should’ve never been, but as effed up as I would get at times, I would have NEVER crossed that heinous threshold! I’d like to say that I’m not judging Laura, as I truly try not to judge anyone, but sometimes I guess it’s only human. In no way, shape or form am I blaming her, that obviously goes to her POS father. All my life whenever I heard “The Mamas and The Papas,” I would be happy to listen and sing along, but now when I hear any of it I’ll be thinking of that MONSTER singing… Still love Laura, and I truly wish her nothing but the very best!!
