Skepticism, so Dull & Condescending

Nope. Way too preachy. Condescending.
Revisado: 05-01-25
Should be a red flag to see the level of arrogance in the opening pages. Pretty much summed up as "Erroneous beliefs are dangerous and we have a duty to fix them, for the safely of all mankind." sooooo... YOUR beliefs are correct and going to save us all? But I was really looking forward to reading scientifically enlightened arguments, so I kept going. Unfortunately, it's far from that with WAY too much emphasis on why religion/God/afterlife is dumb.
For example, science hasn't found a soul particle, so religion is dumb. QED. That's pretty much his argument. It would have been much more interesting to talk about WHY religion is universally accepted in so many different forms, and how we are both hurt by and benefit from it. It was just dry and preachy. Also, don't conflate reincarnation and resurrection. It shows the author doesn't grasp the nuances of the topic he is arguing, and makes me run away FAST.
Ironically, one thing you should be skeptical of is his logic. It was almost entertaining (almost) to see so many bad arguments and logical fallacies in the book. Should be a school assignment to pick out things like: straw man, hasty generalization, false dilemma, antidotal evidence, etc. For example, the author tricked someone into believing that he's a fortune teller, and used that to show fortune telling is fake. OK, it is, but think about the logic. What if I tricked someone into believing I was a doctor?
Contrarians sell books, and I'm sorry I fell for it.

Historia
In Made in America, Bryson de-mythologizes his native land, explaining how a dusty hamlet with neither woods nor holly became Hollywood, how the Wild West wasn't won, why Americans say 'lootenant' and 'Toosday', how Americans were eating junk food long before the word itself was cooked up, as well as exposing the true origins of the G-string, the original $64,000 question, and Dr Kellogg of cornflakes fame.

Great book, not Bill Bryson's best

several chapters were absolutely amazing, but the unending list of words and etymology references became more and more tedious this book went on.

Unconditional Parenting

Historia
One basic need all children have, educator Alfie Kohn argues, is to be loved unconditionally, to know that they will be accepted even if they screw up or fall short. Yet conventional approaches to parenting such as punishments (including "time outs"), rewards (including positive reinforcement), and other forms of control teach children that they are loved only when they please us or impress us. Kohn cites a body of powerful and largely unknown research detailing the damage caused by leading children to believe they must earn our approval.

Wonderful message, horrible book
Revisado: 11-15-20
We all need to hear the message of this book: 1) Love kids unconditionally 2) Build capable, happy kids, not "well-behaved" kids that only do what we say 3) Respect and listen to your child. But the author spends WAY too much time attacking/complaining/tearing down other authors/ideas. Endless mom-shaming. More than half the book is negative. Being a parent is hard, we don't need the sarcasm and punches in the gut. I'm not saying we don't need correcting, just don't be a jerk about it. Great (and positive) advice does show up in chapter 8 to the end.
Written in a meandering, disjoint flow. He repeats the same points throughout the book. There's just no organization.
The author states that praising/rewarding should be avoided since it communicates conditional love. Really? NO! It is true that praises can be manipulative. It is also true that it might just be your child's love language, and the primary way they feel love from you. Regardless, praise your child as much as possible! Just make it real and genuine, with no strings attached.
I really wanted to recommend this book, but the author takes a great message that I really connect with and ruins it.

If you know what email phishing and encryption is then you'll probably get bored with this quickly. I thought the sample audio clip was a little misleading, I learned more from it than I did the rest of the program.

Could not finish...
Revisado: 09-18-19
I almost never write a review, but this book is absolutely horrible. Narration sounds like text to speech. Some of the examples he sites are interesting, but he never goes into much detail, so there's very little learned as he go through the book. Lots of buzzwords with very little content, other than a cursory review of current events. Apparently, quantum computing is going to be the next big thing and lithium batteries will be here forever. So many times I found myself just saying, huh? I wish I could comment on the last half of the book, but I never made it that far.

Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

Great book and an amazing story, just way too long. It needs an abridged version.
