Historia
This reissue of Thomas Sowell’s classic study of decision making, which includes a preface by the author, updates his seminal work in the context of The Vision of the Anointed. Sowell, one of America’s most celebrated public intellectuals, describes in concrete detail how knowledge is shared and disseminated throughout modern society. He warns that society suffers from an ever-widening gap between firsthand knowledge and decision making—a gap that threatens not only our economic and political efficiency but our very freedom.

Foundational text

While some arguments are much better articulated in Sowell’s later work and some reframed with better data there are several timeless jewels of reason in this one.

Historia
In 2006, John Warren and John Thompson led Marines into combat in the world’s most dangerous city: Ramadi, Iraq. But when they got home, employers didn’t understand what they had to offer. Undeterred, they founded their own specialty mortgage company, growing it from scratch into a national powerhouse over the course of a decade.

The Marines clearly instill solid leadership basics. This flimsy manual attempts to parlay that solid base into a recipe for success by way of usury adjacent business and pure digital grift.

What happened to Islamic reform? Why have al Qaeda and Boko Haram become the faces of contemporary Islam? Why has the Arab Spring devolved into a battle over sharia law? Continuing her personal journey from a deeply religious Islamic upbringing to a post at Harvard and American citizenship, the New York Times best-selling author of Infidel and Nomad crafts a powerful call for an Islamic reformation as the only way to end the current wave of global violence and repression of women.

Historia
German military history is typically viewed as an inexorable march to the rise of Prussia and the two world wars, the road paved by militarism and the result a specifically German way of war. Peter Wilson challenges this narrative. Looking beyond Prussia to German-speaking Europe across the last five centuries, Wilson finds little unique or preordained in German militarism or warfighting. Iron and Blood takes as its starting point the consolidation of the Holy Roman Empire, which created new mechanisms for raising troops but also for resolving disputes diplomatically.

Historia
More than a decade before the release of the book that would make him famous, Robert M. Pirsig had already caught hold of the central theme that would animate Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Though he was revered by fans who considered him a guru, the famously private Pirsig published only two books and consented to few interviews and almost no public appearances. Now, for the first time, listeners will be granted access to five decades of Pirsig’s personal writings in this posthumous collection that illuminates the evolution of his thinking to an unprecedented degree.

Aisha is really likable, especially when calling b.s. on some cultural ideologues. I kept feeling, though, like I was listening to Candace Owens having been trained by Ibram Kendi- in a parallel universe. Seems like she should read some Coleman Hughes to figure it all out.

Too tribal
Revisado: 10-01-23
At least the title was honest. Those herein represented as the “best” mostly fit a relatively narrow type: tech enamored, narcissistic stoics obsessed with seeking physical elevation to match their wealth.
I do believe that I can learn something from everyone. That said, Tim estimates that around 17 of these interviews will resonate with the listener. There were five that moved me. A second five were worth with listening to. Another five I actually feel dumber for having sat through. The rest, eh.

Revisado: 02-28-22
Who is Thomas Sowell? Too many people have no idea! I was one of the many unfortunate who had never been exposed to his work even through economic studies in college, a shameful omission. Be careful, Alan will introduce you to a man whose ideas may change the way you see the world!
