Unfortunately, Haley Cass and I are not on the same page

I really like Cass’ previous works, so I was eager to listen to On the Same Page. However, this is not only my least favorite work by Cass, it showcases my least favorite character (maybe in all lesbian romances near and far). The plot was immature, which is not typical of Cass. Riley Beckett was a very sanctimonious character, and does not improve through the decade she’s written. From her premature and knee jerk assumptions about her best friend (from college through the end of the novel), to the sudden infantilization of her twin sister (who was featured in another novel and was lovely to read), she did not learn. She was hard to read and I found myself mad about her behavior throughout the novel. The book was extra long, without significant development. It seemed unedited. It was immature in plot.

If there is a follow up novela, I will not read it.

Bright spots - the growth of the other main character (Giana), and the steadfast group of friends around both Riley and Giana.

Lori Prince was solid as always.

This book will make me think more about purchasing another Cass book.

This was a lopsided story. Lucy had her flaws but no one had her back in this story. I’m not sure why the main characters ended up together. Sierra couldn’t take responsibility for her actions in the second half of the story. Everyone seemed to rally around her, even the people who were supposed to love and support Lucy.

I found Hannah to be an insufferable “best friend.” Yes, you should hold your friends accountable, but I found no empathy from her in this story. In my mind, she’s a terrible “bestie.” Lucy navigated the story on her own and was the only one to take accountability.

I would not recommend this story, in any form, to another person.

The plot had a lot of potential, but the main characters were under developed.

Kennedy focuses a lot (an unpleasant amount) on her “caloric intake.” It was irresponsible in the authors part given the prevalence of body image issues in society. Eating “too much” was mentioned a number of times without anyone addressing it.

The overall plot was rushed and somehow the main characters fell in love over the course of a month without interacting for at least a week.

The narrator was the worst part. Her tone is sultry but uncomfortably so. She did a downright terrible job of differentiating character voices. I never understood who was speaking. I’ll actively avoid her works in the future.

This is a very sweet story and I enjoyed the main characters quite a bit. I wish I’d have read it or that it had a different narrator. For some reason, this narration sounded mechanical and flat. I almost turned it off multiple times because she sounded like an AI recording. I won’t seek out anymore of her narrations.

This was a very sweet story. It was easy to root for all the characters. I do wish that authors would publish these stories with women who were older than their early 20s (and without a huge age gap), but that’s not a critique of this story.

Kerstin is truly an unbearably selfish character. I found myself wishing Bennet would tell her off. Her 17 year grudge was petty and unreasonable, much like the rest of her behavior throughout the novel.

The narrator was also difficult to enjoy. I don’t think I’ll listen to anything she narrates again.

I enjoyed the story until the last 30 minutes. Andrea was harder to like the light he entire story, but she was downright mean in the end. The only thing that really saved it was that we could at least hear her thoughts. She was petty and rude. If this were real life, Kendall probably should have walked away from her.

I typically love novels by G Beers. However, this one was incredibly disappointing and bordered on toxic.

Charlie received a job offer following college. She decided to end her long-term relationship (that had been described as drifting for a year) to take that job. She loses that job and her girlfriend five years later forcing her home to her parents.

Emma is her ex. She’s also successful, but harbors extreme hurt, bitterness towards Charlie. It’s been five years, and Emma is still “wrecked” by Charlie. It’s very juvenile.

The majority of the novel is spent with other characters piling on Charlie for moving to the city to pursue her dreams. She does own some fault - she cut off communication with her family. But, the message that Charlie should feel guilty for pursuing her dreams is in poor taste. Emma spends time sending Charlie mixed messages and blaming her for all of her own emotional trauma. Again, childhood/college relationships rarely last. We all grow and move on.

Lori Princes narration is great. This novel just completely missed the mark.
