I really loved this though the actual story is horrible. I hope that sperm bank is shut down, but they'll probably get away with everything 🤷‍♀️ the narrator was great and it was very well written. This is very important for anyone considering IVF or just anyone to know just how unregulated this industry is.

The content is fascinating and right up my alley but the book is SO BORING. It doesn't help that the narrator is sterile and almost sounds like a robot. But I think the worst is that the writers go back and forth between writing for an academic audience and a lay audience. It kills me because this content doesn't HAVE to be boring, but oh it is. Possibly some of the boring would be made better if there were charts, having statistics read in a never ending stream for a whole paragraph without any analysis and context is very draining. Would not recommend. I would have returned it, but I took more than a year to start listening to it 😔 my bad

The writing was very basic, it reminded me of romance novels or young adult fiction. It wasn't bad, just mediocre. Was it worth an audible credit? I guess so, it helped me pass the time while wrapping Christmas presents and exercising. I was curious to know what happened next, kind of like a captive rat keeps pressing the button so treats get dropped into the cage. Overall, I would have preferred Wilde's character archetype in a romance novel setting, since he is a classic trope in that genre and just felt flat and out of place in this modern mystery genre.

The tone also felt old, like the author was using his characters to gripe about modern technology social conventions. When Wilde's character complained about "teenagers" and technology, it felt incongruous with the character. There were several occasions like this in the book that added to the disconnect I felt for the entire novel, as if it was not really written for me, which is fine, not everything is. I feel like this novel would maybe be better suited for people who are 50+

MCH was a fantastic narrator, his vocal consistency really brought the story alive. Truman Capote's writing was very emotionally evocative and there were some teal moments of beautiful writing. The story left me a little cold, probably because it's been built up my whole life as something amazing but by the time I got to it I just heard another story about a man who loves a young [1950s] manic pixie dream girl.
