Historia
A stunning collection of short stories - mostly dealing with the sex trade - by the late Chilean master and author of The Savage Detectives. The Return contains thirteen unforgettable stories that seem to tell what Bolano called "the secret story," "the one we’ll never know." Bent on returning to haunt you, Bolano’s tales might concern the unexpected fate of a beautiful ex-girlfriend, or soccer, witchcraft, or a dream of meeting the poet Enrique Lihn: They always surprise.

Historia
For three crucial years in the 1930s, the Spanish Civil War dominated headlines in America and around the world as volunteers flooded to Spain to help its democratic government fight off a fascist uprising led by Francisco Franco and aided by Hitler and Mussolini. Today we're accustomed to remembering the war through Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls and Robert Capa's photographs. But Adam Hochschild has discovered some less familiar yet far more compelling characters who reveal the full tragedy and importance of the war.

Powerful stories
Revisado: 03-19-17
Hochschild pulls together a lot of wonderful personal stories about those who volunteered to defend democracy in Spain. Mixed-in is political commentary on the German, Italian, Soviet and US government's roles or lack of roles that does not really lend itself, imho to the biographical style Hochschild employs, sometimes relying on pop-historical tropes and not always drawing connections between the pro-fascist and appeasement forces in the West and the reality that socialist forces have, since the early 19th century, been forced to be the true guardians of the ideals that capitalist governments cherish only in the abstract. As with Spain, the West has been all too happy to sacrifice workers and idealists who actually take those ideals seriously. The book is a must read for those interested in the roots of the modern political world.

Historia
"'Boy, do I have a lot to learn!'" Anyone who's ever picked up a musical instrument of any kind - from the first caveman banging rocks to that little kid at the guitar shop - has thought that. I know I did. I'd been trying for years to break in to the music scene, to show everyone my chops, to make my mark. And I was good. But I wasn't great. I knew that there was something wrong. Then the teacher showed up...."

Maybe just not for me
Revisado: 04-09-15
Was The Music Lesson worth the listening time?
No,t for me.
Any additional comments?
I love Wooten's performances, but I just think this book is poorly written. Perhaps there are musicians who might find something useful or interesting here, but I think it is a cute idea that doesn't really go anywhere, sort of like someone else's dream that you don't really want to hear about until you've had coffee.
