Historia
In the summer of 1941, Hitler ruled Europe from the Atlantic to the Black Sea. Britain was struggling to combat his powerful propaganda machine, crowing victory and smearing his enemies as liars and manipulators over his frequent radio speeches, blasted out on loudspeakers and into homes. British claims that Hitler was dangerous had little impact against this wave of disinformation. Except for the broadcasts of someone called Der Chef, a German who questioned Nazi doctrine, and most importantly, a character created by the British propagandist Thomas Sefton Delmer, a unique weapon in the war.

Timely and instructive
Revisado: 12-12-24
This is a biography more than a how-to but it's interesting. It could use more present day analysis. Some of the people introduced were hard to keep straight but still instructive.

Historia
A devastating attack by the lich Quatach-Ichl has left Zorian and Zach reeling as their remaining restarts tick away. As they recover, they make preparations for their final confrontations with Red Robe, the lich, the primordial being, and the invaders—all within the shadow of a question they can’t answer: can Zorian and Zach both survive outside the time loop? When the time loop is broken, sacrifices will be made, bonds will be tested, and trust will be more important than any magical skill or power—and even then, success is not guaranteed.

Historia
A teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, Zorian is attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. A driven and quiet young man, he is consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, resenting the Kazinskis for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, Zorian has no time for pointless distractions, much less other people's problems.

Surprisingly entertaining!
Revisado: 05-25-24
I am a picky reader. I enjoyed this! It's not literature, but it's a fun read and a unique idea of combining LitRPG fantasy with a cozy mystery using a time loop as a device. The magic system is tropy but the familiarity is comforting and there are fun surprises. The author doesn't spend much time on descriptions. There is not a lot of setting details or theme (yet), but characters, conflict, and plot make for an entertaining story competently told. I will read the rest!

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Great autobiography on eating disorders
Revisado: 11-12-22
I saw this autobiography recommended and decided to give it a try despite not knowing who Jennette McCurdy is. I never watched iCarly or Sam and Cat. The blubs on the cover are a little misleading. This isn't really a funny story. Jennette does tell her story with wit and insight but it's not hilarious. It's painful and poignant, but it is well told. Jennette is a good writer. This is a good book. The title is honest and bittersweet. The content is raw and direct. I wish Jennette health and happiness and future success in whatever pursuits lift her up.

Even the slog is still among the best fantasy
Revisado: 03-25-22
This book takes place during what some call the slog. It has more summary and less of a climax than other books, but strong plot development happens in this book leading our scattered character groups to be positioned to begin some exciting climaxes that have been building. A satisfying read.

Historia
In Wisdom, Shelter. That’s the official motto of the Scholomance. I suppose you could even argue that it’s true—only the wisdom is hard to come by, so the shelter’s scant. Our beloved school does its best to devour all its students—but now that I’ve reached my senior year and have actually won myself a handful of allies, it’s suddenly developed a particular craving for me. Even if I somehow make it through the endless waves of maleficaria that it keeps throwing at me, I haven’t any idea how my allies and I are going to make it through the graduation hall alive.

Great second installment!
Revisado: 11-12-21
I'm iffy on YA fantasy but this story is satisfying. The narration is fantastic and even the 1st person stream of consciousness POV is forgiveable. The only thing I wish Ms Novik spent a little more time on is descriptions of people because I get all the non main characters confused. But a fun read overall

Historia
I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

Much better than most YA
Revisado: 11-01-21
I whipped through this so I must have enjoyed it. The style takes a little getting used to, especially if you dont like 1st person YA narration, which I generally don't, and the MC comes off as an eye rolling brat who thinks her lack of social skills is an asset, but Novik is a competent writer and there are justifications for these character decisions as well as an interesting world and magic system with substantially interesting stakes. There is still a bit of the logic gap that plagues stories like these where young adults are abandoned by adults to fend for themselves against terrors for "reasons", but Novik puts more effort into it than most. I am sufficiently entertained to read the next one.
