Historia
John Rain is back. And “the most charismatic assassin since James Bond” ( San Francisco Chronicle) is up against his most formidable enemy yet: the nexus of political, military, media, and corporate factions known only as the Oligarchy. When legendary black ops veteran Colonel Scott “Hort” Horton tracks Rain down in Tokyo, Rain can’t resist the offer: a multi-million dollar payday for the “natural causes” demise of three ultra-high-profile targets who are dangerously close to launching a coup in America. But the opposition on this job is going to be too much for even Rain to pull it off alone.

I liked the suspense and realistic approach to what easily could have become Mission Impossible or James Bond fantastic.

Historia
All John Rain wants is to get out of the killing business. But with his discretion, his reliability, and his unique talent for death by "natural causes," no one is willing to let him just retire. So when an old nemesis from the Japanese national police force comes to him with a new job - eliminate Murakami, a killer even more fearsome than Rain himself - Rain knows he can't refuse. Aided by an achingly desirable half Brazilian, half Japanese exotic dancer he knows he shouldn't trust, Rain pursues his quarry into the heart of a shadow war between the CIA and the yakuza.

It was worth the time and money. I usually don’t like time jumps in story telling, here the story was enhanced by them.

More than worth the read/listen
Revisado: 12-12-22
It has been quite some time since a story has so thoroughly captivated me. I could not stop and yet the more I went on the nearer the eventual end I became. When at last I’d arrived my only disappointment was that I was there. Well, that and when I looked for other works by James Kestral I found there were none. I had been looking forward from the first pages to getting into another.

Historia
In 2010, the words “earthquake swarm” entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia—including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove—was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon.

Worst Narrator Ever
Revisado: 09-04-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I typically like William Lashner's books, but the narrator - Patrick Lawlor was so bad he ruined the story.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Bagmen?
There really wasn't much. I couldn't even finish the book. There were a lot of good wisecracks, but the narration was so horrible I gave up.
Would you be willing to try another one of Patrick Lawlor’s performances?
No. He's that bad. If any of my other top list authors use him, I'll bypass unless I have the time to read it for myself via hardcover. I'm dyslexic, so I'm very careful about how I invest my time for reading pleasure. This is why Audible is so good for me. I can experience the stories and it won't take me 6 weeks to finish because I read so slowly. But a poor narration is death to a book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. Extreme.

What made the experience of listening to Orphan X the most enjoyable?
I've read/listened to just about everything Gregg Hurwitz has done so far. Have yet to be disappointed. OrphanX is one of his best works. Well worth the time, the money and/or the credit.

Huge CJ Box Fan
Revisado: 10-21-15
Where does Badlands rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It ranks high but not highest. The narrator was not right for this story. Should have been male. Though one of the main heroes is female, the story had a male voice, especially when speaking from the child's point of view.
What other book might you compare Badlands to and why?
The other two Cody Hoyt books, even though this was really more of a spin off from those.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She was the wrong voice for this story. She's a good narrator, I believe, but not for this kind of story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I think the author got into the head of a troubled child's mind rather well. He captured what it must be like living in this ignored and discounted boys head very well.
Any additional comments?
Try Luke Daniels for future books from this series as a narrator. I think he will deliver a better voice for the characters.

Easily the best Easy Rawlins mystery yet.
Revisado: 07-03-15
What made the experience of listening to Rose Gold: An Easy Rawlins Mystery the most enjoyable?
So many things. I think what I enjoyed most was that Easy finally seems to be gaining a clearer picture of what he wants his life to be about. He's got a direction.
What other book might you compare Rose Gold: An Easy Rawlins Mystery to and why?
There aren't any, really. Easy Rawlins is his own character. Sure, he's a detective of sorts, but he's so much more than that. What he really is, I believe is an observer and a chronicler of his own evolution and the society he is evolving within.
Which scene was your favorite?
Don't know that I had a favorite. The book, though it has plenty of action, is also evenly written. The flow is very much like the main character himself: Easy.
Who was the most memorable character of Rose Gold: An Easy Rawlins Mystery and why?
Always, it's Easy Rawlins.
Any additional comments?
Get the book. But buy it last. Listen to every Easy Rawlins story in order and when you get to this one, know that you've saved the best for last. But hopefully there's more to come.
