Interesting story, a lot of characters
Revisado: 04-15-25
I really enjoyed this story. I loved in the 1920s prohibition backdrop, and the main characters were really likable. I can appreciate what the author attempted to do with bringing the very complex world to life, however, I found myself getting confused with all of the different names and characters. Which is why it took me a minute to make sense of the surprise detail that was revealed at the end. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the love stories depicted and the difficult but mature choice Nelly made

Cute.. just okay
Revisado: 01-03-25
Cute story overall. Of course novellas are shorter but I also felt this was rushed and left some holes in the story. A little predictable and not believable, but wrapped in a nice bow at the end. Loved the cast & narration!

For months I stood in the wings, an understudy waiting for my time to shine. I never imagined he would be in the audience that night. Canon Holt. Famous film director. Talented. Fine. Before I could catch my breath, everything changed. I went from backstage Broadway to center stage Hollywood. From being unknown, to my name, Neevah Saint, on everyone's lips when Canon casts me in a star-studded Harlem Renaissance biopic. But stars shine brightest in the dead of night. Forbidden attraction, scandal and circumstances beyond my control jeopardize my dream.

Great story, unexpected surprise
Revisado: 11-21-24
I really enjoyed this story.. the characters were likable and had great depth. I knew the 2 main characters would somehow become connected but I was pleasantly surprised how the author did it. Learned alot about the subject matter (not tryna share spoilers) — but overall a story of true love, self-discovery, the supernatural, and the power of sacrifice. Definitely enjoyed!!

Historia
When Kitty Karr Tate, a White icon of the silver screen, dies and bequeaths her multimillion-dollar estate to the St. John sisters, three young, wealthy Black women, it prompts questions. Lots of questions. A celebrity in her own right, Elise St. John would rather focus on sorting out Kitty’s affairs than deal with the press. But what she discovers in one of Kitty’s journals rocks her world harder than any other brewing scandal could—and between a cheating fiancé and the fallout from a controversial social media post, there are plenty.

A story that is all too real
Revisado: 09-17-24
Loved this story!! One that was all too common during that time, and a story that was necessary to tell. I can appreciate the detail in which the author connected all of the different characters. The narration was OK overall, I preferred Hazel and Kitty however, the narrator of Elise wasn’t as bad as the other comments suggest.
The overall story is about white passing, and the twisted webs this type of choice weaves. Well written, and I can appreciate the somewhat utopian ending (us African Americans know that probably ain’t happening in real life, but it’s nice to read!)

A story of hard choices & 2nd chances
Revisado: 03-24-24
Loved this story. Historical fiction. Themes of: racism, classism, colorism and what happens when opposite worlds collide. TW: forced adoption, miscarriage, racial tensions.
I appreciate the authors diligence in telling a story that is fairly common but not given much attention. Both protagonist’s stories were very believable and they had to make hard choices in order to have the lives they wanted. I loved the dual narration, both narrators did each character justice. The entire book I wondered how their lives would cross paths and I was satisfied with the ending. I liked the somewhat cliff hanger we were left with & i would love to see a sequel with Wila finding out the truth.
I can also appreciate the author telling the dark side of adoption — yes, In many cases a child gets to be raised in “better conditions” but it often comes with a backstory of much pain & trauma. And while places like the “gingerbread house” are a thing of the past, modern day adoption agencies still cause harm.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Science, love, and creating your own lane
Revisado: 01-18-24
I really enjoyed this story. The narration was great. I loved the 1950’s backdrop and the way sexism and misogyny were attacked head on. The themes and interactions were believable. I loved the characters. Elizabeth Zott is brilliant, uncompromising, true to herself, and resilient. I hate that her and Calvin’s love story was so brief. The other characters were fun and colorful, I could really picture them. Overall great story, with somewhat of a full circle (& happy) ending.
My only person downside is that I would have appreciated having some characters of color, or mention of the civil rights movement considering the times it was written. It seems like the series is interweaving that though!

Great listen
Revisado: 01-01-24
I really enjoyed this story. The backdrop of early 90’s LA was beautifully interweaved. This is a coming of age story of a well-off teen black girl who comes to understand what it means to be who she is amidst: friendships, family, her black identity, socioeconomic status —- ultimately bringing her to a place of deciding who she wants to be. I loved the multifaceted dynamics among the relationships in the story.
If you enjoy YA, race & social relations, coming of age, and complicated family dynamics, give it a shot.

MUST READ - A story of self-discovery, love, true identity, and the true cost of fame.
Revisado: 06-21-23
I absolutely loved this book! The author did an amazing job at creating such a dynamic story line, character development, and the art of telling a story within a story. The narration was great and made the characters come to life. You fall in love with the idea of Evelyn Hugo and then even more with who she truly is… the connection to Monique didn’t feel quite predictable but I knew it was something related to what it turned out to be. Overall, amazing story, lots of colorful characters, and it challenges you to think more about values, decision making, and the masks we wear.

TW: grief, still-birth, postpartum depression
A story of love, loss, 2nd chances, and what happens when you do the work to become a better version of yourself. Loved this story, the characters were so real and had such depth & development. The outcome of the story is rare but the author did an amazing job of weaving in the complex, vulnerable, and tough decisions that are necessary to have this type of outcome. She didn’t hold back and she wrapped the story up beautifully. Instant fave!
