Historia
It's hot, remote, desolate, and dangerous - and about as deep into the infamous Australian outback as anyone would dare to venture. An eminent neurosurgeon and his family, on the holiday of a lifetime, are shot dead, their shattered bodies left to the ravages of the desert sun and carrion-eating wildlife. Detective Inspector Russell Foley and his best friend, Detective Sergeant Sam Rose, are sent into the heart of the legendary Harold Lasseter, "Lost Reef of Gold" country, to investigate the brutal murders.

Boring and cliched
Revisado: 04-26-25
The best thing about the book is the setting in the Northern Territory.
I enjoyed the first book in the series very much, but the second is a huge disappointment. There is no mystery, silly dialogue, and a protracted emergency situation of very little interest. The relationships and the villain (and sub-villains) are merely comic book cliches. The only good character development was for short-lived personas!
I will give the third book a chance, since the first was so good, but if it's not back to standard, it will be my last.

Historia
At police headquarters in steamy, tropical Darwin, a cop is brutally slain - right under the noses of his colleagues. The equally savage murder of select members of Darwin's legal fraternity follows, leaving investigating officers completely baffled. Is there a serial killer at large, and what connects the victims? These are the questions lead homicide investigator Russell Foley struggles with, while facing his own personal demons brought about by a failed marriage and the disintegration of his relationship with his best friend.

This police procedural was fun and captivating. I came for the setting in the Northern Territory and stayed for the mystery. Quite enjoyable!

James Patterson leads you into the darkest recesses of the mind with this chilling, immersive audio thriller. We meet Brent Quill, a frustrated actor trying to take his game to the next level. When he learns about the intensive Method acting process, he dives in deep—and immediately lands the lead role in a TV series about a brutal serial killer. But when the Method’s controversial techniques start to take over Brent’s psyche, the lines between real life and acting begin to blur dangerously. How far will Brent go to “become” the character?

Audio experience is unpleasant
Revisado: 04-06-25
The story could have been a nice short story of half the length. The audio experience is quite awful, however. There is ugly music, silly sound effects, & a varied volume level (jarring or too quiet). I like to listen while waiting to go to sleep & this was not at all suitable for that.

Tedious
Revisado: 03-23-25
I thought this was authored by the Mark Edwards that writes such good domestic noir. However, this boring and lengthy story could not possible be by a gifted author! The book is way too long, has a ridiculous plot, has many dull interludes of action for no reason, and has lots of indistinguishable characters. No character had anything semblance of truth or of interest.
I thought it was boring from the beginning but I kept waiting for a payoff. I only got 10 wasted hours.

Historia
Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions. In 1982 Victorian police were called to a home on a housing estate an hour west of Melbourne. There, they found a five-year-old boy lying still and silent on the carpet. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but the child, Jacob, died the next day. The story made the headlines, and hundreds attended the funeral. Few people were surprised when the boy's mother and her boyfriend went to prison for the crime.

Fabulous!
Revisado: 03-05-25
This book is simply wonderful. It is a bit hard to catergorize, as there are parts that are mystery, a coming-of-age, a comedy of manners.
The writing technique is simply outstanding. There are many voices that pick up the story & propel it forward, with ALL being realistic portrayals of a varied case of Australian characters.
I started this book in the evening but I finished it in the middle of the night (missing sleep!) b/c I could not wait to find out more!
This book is FREE & fabulous.

Frustrating, preaching, simple novella
Revisado: 02-28-25
Caroline Overington is a talented author (read Say No More and Matilda is Missing, for example). I had high hopes but this book does not seem to be written by the same person. Aggravating faults include setting it in the US for an unknown reason, being very preachy about masks and Covid fears, featuring simple, mostly unlikable characters, and failing to wrap up a few story threads fully. In other books by the author, I found outstandingly realistic dialogue -- that is not the case here.
The narration does sound American but it has strange pronunciations, the worst of which is the many instances of "TAD OOOO" (turns out that is "tattoo") but also including FORT Worth (instead of the emphasis on WORTH) and others.
On the strength of quite well-written books by this author, I'll keep going through all the offerings. My advice is to skip this one.

Amazing!
Revisado: 02-16-25
What sets this book apart is very clever framing in how the story evolves. It's easy to follow the different POVs and every line of dialogue could be spoken by a real person.
The author spins a compelling tale, with the reader rooting for the adults to have just a little more insight into their behavior. I usually like thrillers, but this all-too-realistic story kept my interest at every moment.
I disagree that the ending is not complete. You do get realistic resolution.

Historia
Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Little sister, troubled teen, backpacker, musical theatre coach, con artist, childcare worker. Murderer. A tragic, traumatic childhood casts a long shadow on the Hoedemaker sisters. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

Sheer delight
Revisado: 02-16-25
The author has a fabulous way with dialogue, quickly showing character, as well as moving the story along, in compeling snapshots. Although there is a lot of childhood trauma realistically depicted, the book has a gentle humor and wisdom as well.
The narration is excellent, every character having a distinguishable voice.
Picking out my next Caroline Overington now, it will be my fourth. I hope she writes fast.

No pay off
Revisado: 11-28-24
So many outstanding Australian mystery and thriller writers. I hoped this would be one but was greatly disappointed. I wish I had my credit back!
There is enough in this novel for a short story, but it was stretched out far beyond interest. There is a very lengthy, and very boring, section that does not relate to the plot about a small boy being rescued from a hole. The small amount of character development for the protagonist is repetitive and unsubtle.

Historia
First published in monthly parts from March 1852 to September 1853, this novel follows the fortunes of three pedestrian characters; Esther Summerson, Ada Clare, and Richard Carstone. The story they tell embondies Dickens' merciless indictment of the Court of Chancery and its bungling, morally corrupt handling of the endless case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, giving the novel its scope and meaning.

Fabulous writing & narrating!
Revisado: 02-27-24
This is a fabulous novel, containing humor, pathos, & clever plotting. I marvel at how modern Inspector Bucket is, how Victorian the other (and numerous) characters are.
Simon Vance is one of the very best narrators and he does a wonderful job with pacing, pronunciation and different accents, clarity. I DO think the book would be greatly enhanced, however, by having a female narrator read Esther's portions.
