Historia
On the Line takes listeners inside a bold five-year campaign to bring a union to the dangerous industrial laundry factories of Phoenix, Arizona. Workers here wash hospital, hotel, and restaurant linens and face harsh conditions: routine exposure to biohazardous waste, injuries from surgical tools left in hospital sheets, and burns from overheated machinery. Broken U.S. labor law makes it nearly impossible for them to fight back.

Outstanding, passionate, honest and necessary
Revisado: 04-02-22
I just finished listening to this book. It has been a long time since I have been so moved and hopeful while still holding on to the pain and toll of the journey. This is a book for every current or future union organizer or any organizer who joins the long-haul struggle for justice and solidarity.
Daisy Pitkin tells the unvarnished personal and public truth about the struggle to organize with workers to form a union. I can't thank her enough for writing this book. It's heartbreaking, hopeful, truthful, complicated, and beautiful.

Simply no one else like Rick
Revisado: 03-03-22
I started listening to the Rick Smith Show when I first moved to Pennsylvania and Rick was in the early days of building his show. I frequently say that Rick taught me everything I needed to know about Pennsylvania politics. Since those days, the Rick Smith Show has grown national in scope, bringing unparalleled focus on the stories that matter to working-class Americans. Rick's slogan "the voice of the working-class" couldn't be more on the mark. There is no other show that brings the voices of the labor movement, workers' struggles, and politics and policies critical to working families.
And I challenge you not to laugh in between the serious discussions. Rick is one of a kind.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Beautiful...in a story of collapse
Revisado: 06-22-20
This book is truly food for the soul... especially at a period in history that often feels like collapse, decline, and social rot. A beacon of care and survival and material love.

Deep reflection for pandemic times
Revisado: 06-11-20
It's creepy reading this book at times. There are moments when Station Eleven's dystopian future in the wake of a global pandemic bleeds into our current (COVID-19) pandemic experience.
I loved this book...so much about coming to grips with a new world, the way our "normal" world is made strange and unrecoverable. Rich characters, compelling story, and glimmers of hope at the edges of civilization.

Historia
On October 5, 2017, the New York Times published an article by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey - and then the world changed. For months, Kantor and Twohey had been having confidential discussions with top actresses, former Weinstein employees, and other sources, learning of disturbing long-buried allegations. But nothing could have prepared them for what followed the publication of their Weinstein story. With superlative detail, insight, and journalistic expertise, Kantor and Twohey take us for the first time into the very heart of this social shift.

One of the best books I've read
Revisado: 11-19-19
Moving, devastating, and filled with hope. This is probably one of the most important books to read in our time. It is a story that reaffirms the best of journalism, the wretching courage if ordinary people, and the systemic patterns of abuse of power.

An "epoch-defining book" (The Guardian) and "this generation’s Silent Spring" (The Washington Post), The Uninhabitable Earth is both a travelogue of the near future and a meditation on how that future will look to those living through it - the ways that warming promises to transform global politics, the meaning of technology and nature in the modern world, the sustainability of capitalism and the trajectory of human progress. The Uninhabitable Earth is also an impassioned call to action.

Critical Read for Those Seeking Real Social Change
Revisado: 11-12-18
Most important and clarifying book about the plutocratic shift in political discourse. Giridharadas lays bare the crafting of the elite discourse that has come to dominate our political imaginary since the 1990s. He goes behind the smiling language of "win-win" to reveal an emergent neo-feudalism dominated by the billionaires of the 21st century.
Really a critical must read.

Historia
When he stepped down in January 2017 as the fourth US Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper had been President Obama's senior intelligence advisor for six and a half years, longer than his three predecessors combined. He led the US Intelligence Community through a period that included the raid on Osama bin Laden, the Benghazi attack, the leaks of Edward Snowden, and Russia's influence operation on the 2016 US election.

50+ Years of Intelligence Work & Trump Disaster
Revisado: 05-30-18
If you are looking for a book that is simply about Trump/Russia collusion...well, this is not your book. Rachel Maddow's interview with Clapper when the book was first released focused almost entirely on Clapper's damning comments about the Trump/Russia investigation and Russian influence in the 2016 election. All that is in this book, but the book is so much more.
This book is the memoir of a person who has been involved in U.S. intelligence for well over 50 years. It's a well told story and fascinating history from the perspective of an insider. There were many places that I fundamentally disagreed with Clapper's political assumptions, but that did not detract from the read. I am very glad I read this!

Historia
The election of Donald Trump in 2016, like most of his campaign, came as a shock to many Americans. How could a man so lacking in capacity, so void of any intellectual heft, become the president of the United States? How could a man with no detectable personal qualities outside of resentment and the will to dominate appeal to millions of Americans, enough so that he was able to win the highest office in the land? With this book, journalist Amanda Marcotte will outline how Trump was the inevitable result of American conservatism’s degradation into an ideology of blind resentment.

Giving a name to the state of Republican politics
Revisado: 05-10-18
Marcotte's book is especially useful in that she gives us a term "Troll Nation" to describe the core to motivation of Republican politics today. The sooner progressives can accept her argument, the better for us all.
She has some pointed critiques of our media culture as well.
The one important shortcoming, in my mind at least, is the Democratic Party is kind of left out of the analysis. Marcotte's argument should be read along with books like Lily Geismer's *Don't Blame Us* and Thomah Frank's *Listen Liberal* .
