Winner of an Obie and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman, Yellow Face is as timely as ever, wrestling with issues of cultural appropriation, complicity, and artistic freedom. It’s brought to life in this audio-only revival by a stunning all-star cast (many playing themselves) led by Daniel Dae Kim.

A potentially good idea, badly executed
Revisado: 04-17-25
I really wanted to like this, but there came a point when I felt the story was going nowhere. The constant sound effects in the form of bells or pings were at many points beyond mildly irritating and didn’t seem to add anything to the narration itself. So sad.

Armed with only the clothes on their backs and zero survival skills, they fight to overcome hunger, thirst, deadly wildlife—and most terrifyingly—decades of accrued resentment. Education can be enriching and transformative. It can also be downright excruciating—even demoralizing. When it comes to learning, why are some of us lovers and some of us haters? Welcome to the world of educational psychology, which uses science to explore what causes people to engage and learn, and what we can do to make learning opportunities more enjoyable and impactful. Spoiler alert: Teachers can only do so much. Students, too, must take control of their learning. Unfortunately, many of us never, ahem, learned the skills to do just that.

Stories of "The American West" often rely on tired tropes of tough cowboys, but real history is much less straight and narrow and way more interesting. Join host Niecy Nash-Betts for a wild round-up of LGBTQ+ lives that got buried in the dust of popular culture and history, and a look at how queer people continue to shape the West today–from gay rodeo to two-spirit identity to trans truckers.

Revisado: 02-27-24
I commend the author for the efflort, but filling Mrs Chesney’s shoes was always going to be an enormous challenge and I’m afraid he’s not quite a match. I can’t help but miss the old Agatha, even if there are glimpses of her here and there. Penelope Keith does what she can with the material, elevating it with her talent.

Meet our heroine, Mo. She’s every dyke’s dream—or so she’s been told by her kind and supportive friends. She’s shy but passionate, politically aware, as committed to her egalitarian all-womyn’s softball team as she is to her volunteer work at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center. So why can’t she find a girlfriend? Could it possibly be because she’s more judgmental than Gertrude Stein and more self-sabotaging than Bojack Horseman?

In the Black Country in the 1950s, ex-boxer Norman Alonso is a determined and humble Jamaican who has moved to Britain with his wife to secure a brighter future for themselves and their children. At the turn of the millennium, Jesse seeks a fresh start in London - escaping from a broken immediate family, a repressive religious community and the desolate, disempowered Black Country - but finds himself at a loss for a new centre of gravity and turns to sex work to create new notions of love, fatherhood and spirituality.

Came for the story, stayed for the narration
Revisado: 01-12-23
Much as I had wanted (and expected) to, I didn’t seem to connect with the story 100% (or most of the characters, for that matter, even if I did find the protagonist quite compelling) but It’s been an interesting read/listen nevertheless. Kudos to the author for his mastery of the various accents. Yes, there is a lot of sex and I’m aware that may put some readers off, but I seldom found it to be a gratuitous inclusion and at least it sounded both natural and honest to me, so I don’t regard that aspect as negatively as others may.

From Pasadena to Cambridge to New York, Washington, D.C., India, Ceylon, Paris, Marseilles, Santa Barbara, and Maine, Bob Spitz re-creates an extraordinary life. He takes us beyond the image of Julia as the tall, eccentric woman with a funny voice who taught America how to cook, to establish her as a genuine rebel and beloved icon, a woman who redefined herself in middle age, helped to change the role of women in America, set the standard for how to create a public personality in the modern media world.

Delicious read
Revisado: 09-13-22
Some of the content overlaps, of course, with that of her autobiography “My life in France” (which I had finished right before tackling “Dearie”), but this book covers her whole life and makes for a fairly delicious read, in my humble opinion.
