The performance: such a beautiful reading voice but I found myself cursing aloud the stereotyping of the voices that the reader tried to distinguish. Not every southern American sounds like they rely on the comfort of strangers, Germans as Bond villains, Italians as Super Mario, Irish as Father Ted and working class Brits as if they come from the set of East Enders. Perhaps in a fictional work or a spoof, but I felt the efforts both distracting and insulting.

Otherwise, a wonderful primer into placebo, nacebo, mindfulness, hypnosis, talking therapies, biofeedback, vagal stimulation, among others. More than a mind/body:spirit smorgasbord, skepticism and data is presented in an engaging manner, nicely processing scientific literature with journalistic interviews.

Awesome therapy journey but seems to be recorded on a lap top in a bathroom - cable movement across keyboard, background noise, traffic, other voices. The author is so engaging and if your therapist is not like Faith - change. If you’re ambivalent about therapy - read and re read this book.

Excellent read for those with ADHD and their partners

As a clinical social worker specialised in couples and relationships work (notably with high functioning autistic adults and adults with ADHD, most of whom have strong trauma history outside of ASD/ADHD) this book is an excellent resource for clients. It’s become one of my go to’s to recommend.
After around thirty years in the field, one of the biggest problems for a couple is when one or both partners become activated into a nervous system dysregulated response, which then escalates conflict and relational injury and generates mental health symptomatology. Providing a circuit breaker is imperative. Melissa’s work shows beautifully how this circuit break can be achieved- how a couple can transcend the often years long battle of disappointment, despair, and, yes, fear and shame that keeps them, unconsciously and consciously, locked into a destructive cycle neither want to be in.
By placing due recognition of the ADHD effect in marriage and managing narratives, mindsets and interactions around traits/issues/symptoms that are due to ADHD, couple conflict can be markedly reduced, hence so to, depression, anxiety and other mental health issues in both spouses. Taking the sting of ADHD related relational injury out the equation does leave the couple free to find and practice that different way of relating, that starts to sow seeds of hope and joy. One of the best ADHD books I have read.
Thank you. Fiona Stojcevski

Bravo author, on the title. What a provocative enticement to go on this well thought out and thorough evaluation of the US education system from an economics professor who has benefitted from the critically analyzed commodity that is education. A quant, contrarian and somewhat of a pedant, Caplan deconstructs, reconstructs and theorizes compellingly NOT against education per se, but against wasteful education. Effectively, the essay is like doing one big regression equation with many variables related to the education system and assigning values to the components that ADD to the economy, employment etc., and suggests streamlining from the curriculum that which is more noise or detracts from employability and benefit from the employment and the economy. He is not rigid and even offers means of deriving the benefits from more obscure curriculum content - but just not on the government's subsidized dime. Fair enough I say! Would have loved to have accessed more of the raw data myself - I'm like that and perhaps, as a non American, to have had a comparison of the generalizability of Capaln's studies with respect to other educational systems (I anticipate significant robustness). Finally, I initially cringed, and then really enjoyed the author's symposium / tea party with imaginary stereotypes to summarize and consolidate the main arguments of his thesis.

Truth serum, elixir of the gods, pacifier, subduing agent, window into the subconscious or nectar into the mind's eye? Nah. It appears that the drug and the associated trips will only reveal more of who you really are. The brightly colored cover if licked will reveal only a taste of cardboard at best or a paper cut at worst so it's not a "how to do" book. The authors do succeed in giving us a short history of the US in the 20th century with the backdrop of acid, psychedelia and rock and roll. Just remember to say NO at the end.

This book provides evidence as to why we're even on this site: the power of story telling. Story telling has the power of cleansing, restoring, repatriating and healing and giving hope when seemingly none is there. I believe the author is continuing to heal. The book, however, tugs at the scars that we all have and through these incursions, makes the scarring more knotted, complex and hopefully stronger as we draw strength from one another. Story telling helps Ishmael in his childhood, through the war, through his soldiering and into and through his "repatriation". His retriggering into and our of trauma. There are instances of fluctuation from innocent child to deep (in)humanity and back again. Memorably, when asked to explain rap music, he describes it as PARABLES that the white man can understand. I will put this book on my therapeutic bookshelf as it can help many of my patients with PTSD that has originated in childhood and watch the journey unfold. Refreshingly, it's applicability is multicultural. The audiobook read by the author lends and additional layer of connection and realism. Thank you Ishmael for sharing with us your stories for both your benefit and especially ours.

It perhaps no surprise that Nietzsche wrote this Teutonic tale while being conflicted about the existence of higher beings and the purpose of life. Each line is quotable and worthy of further study. As a journey it takes us in all directions at times the text argueth with itself consistent with the author's predicament and the arcane language promotes self examination and distance from the "story". I look forward to re reading it but I think I need something uplifting to re-engage with humanity.
