As a former journalist I appreciate the sentiment with which the host delivers her regular (every single episode) lecture about how reporters have to “get the facts right” and the implication that only local reporters (mostly implying only she) is equipped to tell this story. And we hear every single episode that she should be above criticism as a podcast host. But she breaks a few concrete rules as both a journalist AND a podcast host. As a journalist, her regular references to borderline personal relationships with sources (referencing their gratitude to her) feels like it blurs the lines of professional reporting. Then as a podcast host, to harp on the social media communities who are discussing (and freely promoting her show) because they’re sharing articles that are behind a paywall makes her seem out of touch with the fact that many don’t have access to pay for every news outlet in the county.

Finally, her producer (her fiancé, we know, we know, we know already) needs to equalize the volume on the ads which are positively deafening in between segments of content.

I wanted to get all the way through the series. But when she went on and on about how hard it had become to run a podcast in her free time and needing to take a mental break from the project she undertook, I was done. There are tens of thousands of true crime writers that tell good stories and do good research and don’t diminish the victims by inserting themselves into every other minute of the story. The narrator sees herself as the hero of this case. I’ll wait for another podcast to cover it.

Even as a mom, I relished the perspective of Dustin Fisher’s take on fatherhood. His natural wit and generally kindhearted nature as a narrator make for both a reassuring and entertaining listen. Like getting advice you didn’t know you needed from a friend you didn’t know you had.

I look forward to Wednesdays weekly because of this pod. Busy and Casey are hilarious, raw, real, unashamed. The show has comforted me through some really rough moments with laughter. As a woman approaching 40, I find Busy and Casey and their guests’ continued candid messaging around trying to get to that place where you stop caring what others think of you to be so supportive and comforting. The celebrity news analysis and health updates and fresh parenting styles are icing on the cake. Thank you to all involved in producing this great show. I only wish it came out more often!
