Mysteries only mount in the third book of the Uncommon Echoes series. Lady Elyssa is not only conniving, but brutal to her three echoes, and she targets her animosity on one echo in particular: Hope, Just as abuse to humans has devastating consequences, Hope has many scars from years of repeated abuse. She also has some independence too...very unusual for an echo! As this drama unfolds, the king's youngest son, Jordan, prepares to marry Elyssa--though he doesn't love her. Jordan's heart really goes to Hope. Even so, if the kingdom is going to be saved, Elyssa and Jordan must wed. Tensions mount and what happens next will leave you racing to the end.

I so loved the first book in the series, Echo in Onyx, that I couldn't wait to read this one. The main character Chessie has been on her own a long time, her mother dead and her father doesn't even know she exists. Chessie has a different relationship with her echoes than Brianna in the first book that adds a whole new dimension to the "echo" theme. Chessie has an unusual ability to slip back and forth between her two echoes...she can be the original or, at will, she can be in the mind and body of Scar or Red. It's a very clever device that enables to her slip in and out of tricky situations, yet it presents its own dangers. The story begins as seemingly an ordinary murder mystery with Chessie investigating certain culprits and saving a Lord Desmond, who almost become the second noble to be killed. After this, this story really takes flight when Chessie learns shocking details about her past and realizes her own life may be in danger. This one's a thriller.

Even though I haven't read many fantasies, this one caught me at once by the collar. I was immediately drawn into this fairy tale world, a place full of quirks and intrigue. Brianna, the main character, is a young woman setting out from home to make her way in the world. She can't foresee the complexities and obstacles that will soon confront her as she takes a job working among the noblesse in Camarria. She also doesn't know that she'll soon be involved in a dangerous masquerade. Narrator Emily Bauer does a great job in capturing this young girl's spirit with her youthful voice, who at times can be innocent and other times fierce and feisty. Sharon Shinn leads us into a most unexpected, mesmerizing world where nobles are shadowed by doubles or triples. One might is often left guessing who is whom and who is the real nobleman or woman and who is playing a game. With murder, mystery, love, intrigue, and clever dialogue, I found myself totally captivated by the story and unable to figure out how this tale could ever be resolved. Now I can't wait to start on the next one.
